Wanted: Volunteers to Take Soft Plastics

We are looking for more parent helpers who can take our soft plastic rubbish to Coles or Woolworths to be recycled. At the moment we are looking for volunteers on Tuesdays, but if you can do another day please get in touch because some of our current volunteers might be able to swap their day. Please email hawkins.elise.e@edumail.vic.gov.au if you are able to help out.

Colour Coded Bin System at Kingswood

As part of our commitment to become a more sustainable school, we now have 4 colour coded bins in every classroom. Here is the link to the video which was shown at assembly on Friday 1st June, about how to use the new bin system at Kingswood. This video was made by the Green  Team to help everyone dispose of their rubbish corectly.

You might like to watch this video with your child to help them remember what can go in each bin. If you are a helper in your child's classroom, please ensure you are throwing any rubbish into the correct bin. If you are unsure,  please ask the students or teachers.

The Green Team Helps out in the Garden

On Wednesday the 6th of June, the Green Team helped out in the garden spreading some mulch near the veggie patch. It was a beautiful sunny day and the students enjoyed spending time outside learning some new skills. The mulch we spread was donated to the school and was made from gum trees which had to be cut down from another property. We were happy to put the mulch to good use and the students enjoyed the eucalyptus smell as well!

World Environment Day

Last Tuesday, June the 5th was World Environment Day. Here is a link to the official webpage which has interesting articles and statistics around our world's plastic consumption: http://worldenvironmentday.global/en. The theme this year was 'Beating Plastic Pollution'. To celebrate, we encourage you to make a pledge to reduce your plastic usage in one of these ways:

  • Buy loose fruit and veg rather than pre-packaged
  • Buy washing powder in a cardboard box
  • Order drinks that come in glass bottles
  • Stop using single-use, plastic-fibre wipes
  • Stop using plastic bottles and plastic cups
  • Use a reusable water bottle and cup
  • Take reusable bags to the shops
  • Cut down on takeaways in plastic boxes
  • Use refillable cleaning and toiletry products
  • Stop using plastic straws
  • Buy in bulk rather than buying individually wrapped items
  • Reuse jars and containers for storing food and leftovers
  • Use glass or metal containers for storing and protecting food, rather than plastic food bags, plastic containers and cling film
  • Use loose-leaf tea rather than teabags, as these may contain plastic
  • Use reusable chopsticks and cutlery
  • Avoid facial and body scrubs containing plastic microbeads

And remember, if you can't reuse it, refuse it.
