Music

The Band Program at McCarthy Catholic College has started positively. We have welcomed 22 new members for the band from Year 7, who are learning a wide variety of instruments. Some of these student have previous experience on their instruments, and have already moved up to our Concert and Jazz Bands, whereas other students are just learning their instruments for the first time. Tuesday mornings are busy and fun with existing Band members tutoring new members on their instruments and helping them develop their skills and understanding as musicians. If you are interested in joining the Band program, new members are always welcome, please speak with Mr McNeill or Ms Swan for more information.

Our Jazz Band and Concert Band are practising on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, and we have a number of ensembles practising during lunchtimes. We have a Brass Quintet, Brass Group, Woodwind Ensemble and Saxophone Group who regularly practise, as well as a number of students who utilise the Rosary Centre to practise their music skills either individually or in small groups.

The Concert and Jazz Bands have had their first performance for the year. Both bands performed at the McCarthy College Open Day on Saturday March 9. Congratulations to all members of these bands for their wonderful representation of the College and the Music programs offered at McCarthy.

On Friday March 8, Year 11 and Year 12 Music students attended a HSC Study Day in Armidale. On the day, students attended a variety of workshops which led them through the various aspects of HSC Music, including performance, composition, musicology and aural. Students received valuable feedback on the day about their own preparation, and came away feeling more confident in their skills in relation to HSC Music.
