Learning and Teaching

INNOVATE

As part of our Food Technology research in Innovate, Year 8 students welcomed guest speakers Kerrie Burgess, Matt Feng and Ben Kim who spoke about their innovative solutions for achieving sustainability. Kerrie introduced her work with Li’l Gas Bottle and explained the process of turning expired gas bottles into designer bowls and planters, while Matt Feng and Ben Kim discussed their company Purestraw and and their work in bringing edible drinking straws to Australia. Students learned that there is more to sustainability than just recycling. By re-purposing items that would otherwise go to landfill, by turning them into beautiful products that people want to keep forever, and by sourcing sustainable, bio-degradable materials to replace the traditional use of plastic, students discovered the breadth of possibilities available for sustainable future solutions. Matt also introduced the electric longboard and Arduino-controlled electric hole-digger he’d designed and built, showcasing the potential of the 3D printing facilities we have at the college.

Year 5 and 8 Outreach Program

Year 8 Beaumaris Secondary College students have been working with Year 5 students from 2 local schools, Beaumaris Primary and Beaumaris North Primary. This was a collaboration by the BEST and Healthy Lifestyles teams, aimed at primary school students so they can experience the teaching and learning at Beaumaris Secondary and explore our fabulous facilities. Each school spent a full morning with us touring the school, doing tabloid sports and lots of fun BEST activities in the laboratory. The Year 8s were fantastic facilitating the activities and talking to the students about our school. Being able to line up at the canteen was a real hit and a great time was had by all.

BNPS Year 2 Mini- Beasts visit

Year 2 students at Beaumaris North Primary school visited last term as part of their Unit of Inquiry. They came and looked at the mini beasts (insects) that live in our wetland. They were also lucky enough to have Elizabeth Walsh of Friends of Native Wildlife give them a tour of Long Hollow Heathland. Lots of fun was had by all and we are very fortunate to have so much biodiversity right at our doorstep!

Bayside Koorie Careers Expo

On Wednesday 11th September, I had the opportunity to attend the Bayside Koorie Careers Expo at Princes Pier in Port Melbourne. The Bayside Koorie Careers Expo was a fun learning experience. Some of the top universities in Melbourne were at the expo including, Monash University, Melbourne University and Victoria University. I was able to talk to the representatives from each of these universities. I learnt about the pathway opportunities available to Indigenous students. I learnt that scholarships are available to Indigenous students that support with funding of future pathways and that there is a lot of help and support available through each University. I received lots of information about Science and Architecture because they are my favourite subjects and interests. The main standout for me was probably Melbourne University because they had the most options and their Science program was also very good. Even though, I am still young it was great to see the possible options available for me in the future.
