In Memory of Dr Charles Bruneau

ISQua was deeply saddened to hear of the recent death of Dr Charles Bruneau.

Dr Bruneau was a physician, trained in Canada, specialised in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. He was an associate professor at McGill University in Montreal in Rheumatology, Immunology and Experimental Medicine and head of Rheumatology in a university hospital linked to the University of Montreal. He worked as medical director at the American Hospital of Paris from 1990 to 1994 before taking the position of Scientific Advisor in the Direction d’Amélioration de la Qualité et de la Sécurité des Soins at the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS), France. He was part of the early team from ANAES (early precursor of HAS) which pioneered the development of the French accreditation programme.  Dr Bruneau will be well remembered for his tireless work on the design, setting up and development of accreditation programmes for healthcare organisations. He worked specifically on the evolution of the accreditation process, in the development of strategies in relation to patient safety, and on the measurement of impact and on the integration of indicators.

Dr Bruneau was a founding member of the ALPHA Council of ISQua’s Accreditation Federation; which later became ISQua's Accreditation Council for the International Accreditation Programme (IAP). He remained an active member of the Council for over 10 years until his retirement in 2013. Dr Bruneau served as the Haute Authorite de Sante (HAS) representative on the ISQua Board from 2007 to 2011; and as an ISQua Surveyor for many years.

Dr Bruneau was an integral part of the team that brought the ISQua Conference to France in 2002 and 2010.

Our sincerest condolences are extended to his wife, family and friends.  Charles leaves a legacy that will forever be with us.
