Week 9 Term 2

From Mrs Hogg

With the colder weather well and truly here, please ensure your child/ren have their names on all items. The sick bay in the office has a growing collection of hoodies and jumpers that have no name on them.

Thank you to parents who have been replying to school text messages to indicate their child’s absence. When you receive an SMS stating your child is absent from school, please respond to the text or ring the front office on 8088 4700. Reasons may include doctor’s appointment, sick - which needs to be explained with more detail, eg cold symptoms. The school's attendance rate is not as high as we would like it to be ... students need to be at school unless ill! With only 9 more school days until the holidays, let's see if we can improve our attendance rate. Every day counts!

Friday Funday

We hope all staff and students will join in our Friday Funday and come to school with their pyjamas! Please ensure you are wearing appropriate footwear with your PJs. If not participating, students should wear their normal sports uniform.

It was great to see so many students getting into the spirit last Friday when students and staff came to school in their house colours!

Medications at school

When a medical practitioner has prescribed medication that must be administered during the school day, parents/carers must:

  • notify the school
  • provide up to date information as required
  • supply the medication and any 'consumables' necessary for its administration in a timely way.

The administration of such medication forms part of the department's common law duty of care to take reasonable steps to keep students safe while they attend school.

The administration of prescribed medication in schools is  carried out by staff who volunteer and who are trained. Except in an emergency, only individual staff members who have volunteered and been trained will administer prescribed medication to students.

Parents/carers of children who require prescribed medication to be administered at school must complete a written request (see document below). All written medical advice and any other relevant documentation is stored in a secure and confidential manner.

Year 5 Opportunity Class 2021

Applications for Year 5 opportunity class placement for 2021 close on Friday 26 June 2020. The application site will close at 5pm on 26 June 2020. Late applications cannot be accepted.

How do I apply?

Parents must apply online at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

Please read the instructions carefully. Applications are open until 5pm on Friday 26 June 2020.

What are opportunity classes?

Opportunity classes can provide intellectual stimulation by grouping together high potential and gifted students who may otherwise be isolated from a suitable peer group. These classes help students learn by using specialised teaching methods and materials.

Year 5 enrolments are available at 76 primary schools including a virtual opportunity class, at Aurora College, for students in rural and remote areas.

Parents apply when their children are in Year 4. This is a two-year placement program and parents are not able to apply for Year 6 entry only.

New virtual class for rural and remote applicants

If you intend to enrol your child at one of the government primary schools in a rural or remote area, you can apply for a place in the virtual opportunity class at Aurora College.

Students who are successful for placement attend their local government primary school and join the Aurora opportunity class for science, technology and mathematics lessons using an online conferencing system. Students connect with their teachers and other students through a virtual learning environment and residential school programs.

Age and school year

Students are usually in Year 4 at the time of applying and when sitting the test in 2020. They are usually born between 1 January 2010 and 31 July 2011. These students will be aged between 9 years and 5 months and 11 years at the time they start Year 5. If your child is out of this age range or in another school Year when you apply, opportunity class principals and executive officers will carefully check the reasons you give. They may ask for more information, or for an interview with you and your child if he or she is very young, to determine whether there are special requirements the school can provide.

We love reading!

Our teachers have a love of reading and we regularly share quality texts with our students. Every week we will be sharing a video of one of our teachers reading a favourite book (of which we have many!)

This week we have Miss Medcalf reading The Very Brave Bear
