Library Corner

We welcomed back our cohort of students in Years 7 to 10 in Week 8 and the return to regular weekly class bookings in the Library. While students and their families are transitioning back to face-to-face learning we would like to remind all Glen Eira College community members of the new  Wellness Collection available via our Wheelers ePlatform. This collection of over 330 ebooks and audiobooks includes self-help titles, inspirational biographies and YA fiction dealing with contemporary issues. Titles include The self-esteem habit for teens, The power of positive thinking for young people,  Flourish. More details here.

The Wheelers eBook and audiobook collection has grown in popularity since the commencement of remote learning. Congratulations and a round of applause go to our top reader for May -Tarini (7B) - who achieved over 35 loans in the month. Tarini was presented a Readings gift voucher.

Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week were commemorated in Weeks 6 and 7 and once again Mrs Gatt created an attractive display of books and small posters. Humanities students researched the many aspects of Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Day, using learning objects saved to a Padlet created by Ms Mattsson. These included links to ClickView videos and other Library resources.

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is still underway. Students will find details on the Library Catalogue and here. Book Club has moved online - to Google Classroom - and students have been invited to participate in book discussions, reviews and in the enjoyment of reading both print and ebooks. A selection of competitions includes Whitehorse Manningham Libraries’ “Flash Fiction” Teen Short Story Competition. Submissions close at midnight on Friday 31 July 2020.

Students interested in joining Book Club classroom can email Mrs Gatt for an invitation. We are also seeking book reviews and short news items from our wonderful team of Library Monitors which will be added to the Library Catalogue dashboard page. This initiative was proposed by our Library Captain Gauri (11B). Submissions by email to Mrs Gatt.

Caitlin (10E), one of our current Duke of Edinburgh volunteers, has shared the following book review. Is this going to be your next read?

Paper Cranes Don’t Fly
‘I learnt that you can sometimes find all the mysteries of the universe in someone’s hug.’
‘I wish for happiness in the end.’

Paper Cranes Don’t Fly. A heart wrenching story following Adam Auutenburg, a teenager that has made the hospital their second home. A book about hope and the challenges of life.

I present to you one of the very few books that can make me bawl my eyes out. I read this book first when it won the gold inky and saw it on the shelf a while ago and decided it was time for a reread, even knowing I wouldn’t be able to stop crying. However I think this book is truly spectacular. It makes you remember how great the power of friendship and love is.

QOTD: Have you read many books that have made you so sad, you couldn’t continue reading it?
AOTD: I think this is that book for me.

Paper Cranes Don’t Fly - Peter Vu

Don’t forget to add your ideas for new library books to the “Suggestions” box placed on the Circulation Desk. Once items have been ordered and acquired, students are notified by email and have the opportunity to be the first borrower of their requested title(s).

Be creative, be courageous, be a reader!

Sherri Michael

College Librarian

Farewell to Ms Sherri Michael

Our wonderful librarian Ms Sherri Michael is retiring. We wish her all the very best for her retirement and thank her so very much for her amazing work in our library. Ms Michael has made some very welcome additions to the GEC library including a re-organisation of the library space, new e-resources which were a blessing during remote learning and much loved vibrant floor cushions for leisure reading. She encouraged students to immerse themselves in books and made sure they had just the right books to read. Ms Michael ran a well attended book club and encouraged our Library Monitors to make valuable contributions to the library. Our Library Leaders represented our students in Ms Michael's farewell.

Thank you Ms Michael! We wish you a happy retirement.

Book Returns

At present books will not be taken off student accounts until at least 3 days after they are returned. Please ignore any overdue emails students may receive for books that have already been returned. Thank you.
