Term 3 Learning Foci

READING

  • Children are expected to read their take-home books at least 5 nights a week. Books would usually be changed every Monday, Wednesday & Friday. This term, you will find a Take Home Readers tab on the BPS Learning Hub. The books that your child would usually bring home should be easy to build fluency and expression. Your child's teacher can explain the levels on the Learning Hub to you. Please record books read in your child’s Reading Diary.
  • Classroom reading includes whole class reading, guided reading and individual reading with a focus on reading strategies and comprehension of a variety of fiction and non fiction texts. (PLEASE NOTE: Your child will be allocated to a weekly guided reading group session following one of our daily webex meetings during the remote learning period.)
  • 5 Finger Retell (Character, Setting, Beginning, Middle, End)

WRITING/SPELLING

  • Diary writing & recounts related to their own experiences
  • Common words - recognising the gold and red words and spelling them correctly within student writing pieces
  • Revision of alphabet and single letter sounds
  • Introduction of common digraphs (ar, ng, ay, sh, ck, ch, ea, er)
  • Word families (eg. play, plays, played, playing)
  • Handwriting formation, size & placement using dotted thirds

MATHEMATICS

  • MAJOR FOCUS: Number
  • Addition and subtraction strategies using concrete materials
  • Understanding simple place value with two digit numbers, particularly teen numbers eg. 13 is 10 and 3 more
  • Exploring counting patterns, by 2s, 5s, & 10s and 1st-10th
  • 100th Day of School!

 

  • MINOR FOCUS: Measurement & Geometry
  • Mapping and language of location eg. left, right, near, far
  • Linking events to days of the week/months of the year
