DISCORD

Discord and Cyber Safety

With our children's increased interactions online, the chance that they face situations that they simply don’t know how to handle also increases. Common cybersafety issues for children include cyberbullying, accessing or sharing inappropriate content and knowing how to protect their personal information.

It is a real challenge for parents to keep up to date with the latest apps or websites, whether this be in gaming or in social media.

One platforms that is being used more now that ever is Discord.  For those parents who know (or may be unaware) that your child has an account on Discord, please check the online chats your child is having.

With over a quarter of a billion users, Discord is one of the more popular ways gamers communicate online. Discord lets friends communicate directly via voice, video, or text, and join servers where larger communities can interact together.

It has also been compared to Slack and has very similar functionality.

Gaming is definitely Discord’s focus, however, it is also being used now by non-gaming uses. The website advertises communities for book clubs, dance classes, and digital conventions. According to polls, young people use Discord for everything from studying for classes to watching Netflix together. The concern with this platform is the nature of conversations and who can engage with your child. Please have a read of the Common Sense Media blog for further information:

Please also see our eSafety page for more information about the game Among Us which many of our students are playing at the moment.  Discord often accompanies this game as the means by which players speak to each other as the game is going on.
