Deep Learning Protocols

The JSC has been working hard on teaching the Deep Learning Protocols to students at Rosanna Primary School in 2020.

Last year, the JSC team, with collaboration of the whole school, came up with nine deep learning protocols that are essential to becoming a curious and successful life-long learner. These include:

  • Being Present
  • Learning with Others
  • Taking Risks
  • Thinking about Thinking
  • Being Positive
  • Never Giving Up
  • Being Curious
  • Independent
  • Giving your Best Effort

This term we decided to begin the year talking about ‘Being Present.’ We have come up with an idea of what shallow, underwater and deep sea levels of being present look like in our learning. We presented these in a role-play to students in the Grade 2-6 area.

SHALLOW

Whilst you might be present and focused in the classroom, you might not be challenging your learning. It might look like you are:

  • Making eye contact with your teacher
  • Doing your work
  • Listening

UNDERWATER

Underwater learning is taking presence to the next level. It means going beneath the surface and taking more control of your learning. It might look like you are:

  • Hearing and understanding
  • Asking questions to clarify.

DEEP SEA

Deep Sea is the highest stage of learning for all students. Deep sea is discovering the richness of learning and applying it to real life.

  • Offering feedback after listening
  • Taking on feedback to improve understanding
  • Taking on learning and applying it to real life.

We are looking forward to all the deep learning that we will be doing in our classrooms.
