Principal's Message

Mr Alan Hope

Term two has been very busy and eventful at KKHS, and we have had many positive things to celebrate as we come to the end of the term.

We were able to hold our tenth annual community Business Breakfast in week 6 of this term. Although this was slightly delayed due to the restrictions in place in term 1, we were delighted to welcome close to 100 guests as we celebrated the many positive connections we have established over the past decade. As always, our student ambassadors coordinated the whole event and did a fantastic job in doing so. We used this event to formally launch a new initiative for our school. The Clontarf Academy has officially been established at KKHS in the old Museum site. The Clontarf Foundation will build positive support for over 100 Aboriginal boys within an encouraging environment in the school. Our Clontarf Director Clark Stanford has already been working with the boys in signing up students to the Academy and will continue to build upon this in the coming terms.

You can read more about the Clontarf Foundation in the Aboriginal Education page of this newsletter.

We have also been celebrating positive achievements with our Under 14 boys' rugby league team finishing in the top two Hunter teams and progressing to the next round of the State completion. A big congratulations to Mr Yulianto for his coaching and dedication to the team. An increase focus in sport will be something that you will be hopefully hearing more about in the remainder of the year with girls' rugby league and boys' basketball teams starting their practice and training sessions.

We have also seen positive community relations with our Junior AECG leadership team attending the local Elders Morning tea in Cessnock as part of Reconciliation Week. The leadership team of Jaimee,  Sam and Georgia were also instrumental in coordinating and and hosting the local Junior AECG Leadership day. A big congratulations to the students along with Ms Lewis and Mrs Edwards for their role in leading this day.

You may also have noticed the significant works taking place within the school hall. This renovation is scheduled to be completed by the end of Term 2  This renovation will provide amazing new spaces for the students to practice, perform and show off their amazing talents in Music, Dance and Drama and we look forward to welcoming you into the space soon.

This term we were also lucky to gain an additional role in the school and are pleased to announce that Toni Wilson has been appointed to the role of Deputy Principal Inclusion and Support. Toni has been a leader in the school for many years and will now expand her leadership to include the whole school role in supporting student engagement as well as management of our Kuta Kaya faculty.

We are also pleased to announce that we have established a new uniform supply agreement with Flanagans, Cessnock. This new partnership means that school uniform items will be available year round directly  from the Flanagans store. We are also happy to announce that some new items including a school sweatshirt, hoodies, track pants and new school shorts and polos will be available in store soon. Please keep an eye on our school social media to see when the new items will be available. As we move into the colder months it is important to remind you all that school uniform is required to be worn by all students.

Finally, we have been able to welcome parents back on site for some small events including a Year 7 induction evening and are looking forward to welcoming parents of our 2023 Year 7 students. We are looking at coordinating some more information sessions for parents to support with student engagement for the remainder of 2022, so please look out for the email links coming soon.

A big thank you to all parents, carers, teachers and students for the positive term. We look forward to Term Three and all of the exciting initiatives that we have planned as we continue to support our staff and students achieve excellence in education.
