Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

Year Eleven students finish their exams tomorrow and then 'Examination Season' is over for another semester!   Year Ten students have done an outstanding job of catching up missed exams due to Covid this week and we have just a few Year Elevens to fill in gaps next week. The energy around Senior School throughout the exam period has been very positive and I have been buoyed by the students’ determination to do their best and support each other.

Last Friday, I spent some time with our Year Eleven VET/General students while the rest of the cohort were in their English exam.  I enjoyed the opportunity of having this group of students together and we talked about their year so far.  Every one of the students told me that they love their pathway and that they are all enjoying school more than they expected.  In particular, they appreciate the fact that most of their courses have a significant practical element.  They are also thriving on the challenge of managing their time efficiently so that they can keep on top of school , work and TAFE commitments.  They agreed that working hard during class time is crucial.  When I asked them if there was anything we could do to improve their pathway, they asked if there might be a way of including some short courses in their program so that they can add to their resumes. They suggested barista courses, white card and skippers' tickets.  I welcome the feedback and will start thinking about their ideas.

This week, I would like to feature our ATAR pathway.  Mia Hawke is studying six ATAR courses and chose this pathway because she loves learning and is looking for direct entry to University.  When I asked Mia about the keys to success on an ATAR pathway and how she copes with six courses, she replied,

“You have to work efficiently and manage your time well.  Choose subjects you enjoy and make good use of Academic Support sessions.  For me, keeping busy away from school is also really important otherwise there’s a danger that you will just study all the time. I play in three school ensembles and two community ensembles as well as being a member of swim club and having a part time job.  The other thing that is really important to me is Community Service.  Being at GSG since Year One has taught me the significance of community and how important it is to give back.”

Mia would like to work in foreign affairs and international law in the future and has applied to ANU to study a double degree in Law and International Relations.
