Japanese

Elective Japanese students had the opportunity to travel to Cowra Japanese Gardens earlier this term to celebrate Children’s Day. The Gardens put on a wonderful day filled with a variety of cultural activities. The students watched a geisha make-up session, participated in Japanese taiko drumming, fed the “koi” carp and engaged in some Japanese games.

Senior students were challenged to initiate a conversation with embassy staff using only Japanese, which was somewhat nerve-wracking, but rewarding for them!

Year 8 students have been learning about Japanese festivals this term and created posters advertising a festival of their choice for their assessment task. In the latter half of the term, students have been preparing for their own small "undoukai” or sports festival, by making headbands with inspirational kanji, learning Japan’s unique “rajio taiso” stretching routine and participating in the Soran Bushi festival dance. Students also had the opportunity to try “yakisoba” noodles, a popular food at festivals across Japan.
