STEAM

Emergency Housing Showcase

Year 8 STEAM students produced an outstanding Emergency Housing Showcase after working tirelessly throughout the term as Project Managers, Engineers and Architects. Students were given the challenge to meet the design brief:

Students are to research and design their own, accessible,

self-sufficient, off-grid emergency house to be used in response to a natural disaster.

The students received inspiration from guest speakers Gioia Gianniotis, GPG Architecture and Design, Tom Balding, Managing Director from Build Pro and David Shutte, Structural Engineer from Shutte and Kennard Consulting to develop their team role identities. Students produced their own companies, branding, prototype and Google Sketchup design of their emergency houses and pitched their idea to an audience that included Year 9 MDCC students and Year 5 and 6 Mater Dei Primary School students. Students have received feedback on their designs from their teachers.

Formative Assessment

STEAM is a simulation of the “real world”. Students are formatively assessed and receive consistent feedback on their progress and development of their ability to communicate effectively, collaborate with others and problem solve throughout the challenges they are presented with.

Young Change Agents

Charles Sturt University partnered with Young Change Agents to bring an entrepreneurial three day workshop to regional schools. Students were mentored and guided by academic and business members from the Wagga Wagga community whilst designing and formulating their social enterprises. Students have received a grant to support the ongoing development of their projects.

Our students were excellent ambassadors for the school and should be congratulated on their efforts over the three days. Thank you also to Emily Pike for speaking on behalf of the participating students on ABC Riverina radio!
