THRIVE

Wominjeka /Hello

On the 9th of June our class A73 went to the newly built ‘Danny Frawley Centre’ in Moorabbin.

Nathan Lovett-Murray was our host, he runs the Moorni+Moorditj Point & Be Proud program.

This special day taught us a lot about respect and racism. We were all sitting with our friends at the start but then Nathan mixed us up so that we worked with people we don’t usually work with. He started off by showing us his documentary ‘The Ripple Effect’ that recently won an award at the sports film awards. (https://www.afl.com.au/video/651255/the-ripple-effect?videoId=651255&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1626762839001).

It is about the story of Nicky Winmar when he lifted his shirt up on the 17th of April 1993, pointed at his skin saying, “I’m black, and I’m proud.” He decided it was time for change, he stood proud.

After we watched the documentary, we did an activity where we had to pick a scenario and write a ripple effect from that action, and the other activity we did was writing down 5 people we could trust and why.

After our session, Josh who works at St. Kilda gave us a quick tour of the training facility and showed us where the coaches make there game plans and then through to the Indigenous room where the photos of every Indigenous player are hung on the wall. We went in 5 students at a time so that we didn’t disrupt everyone. If we weren’t in the room, we were downstairs in the history museum where we viewed the premiership cup.

After we finished at the tour, we hopped back on the bus, and we were happy to hear that we were getting Maccas on the way home!

On behalf of A73 we would like to thank Mr Ferra, Mrs Brennan, and the Saint Kilda Football Club.

We had such an awesome day.

There will hopefully be vision of our visit on Channel 7 tonight during the half time-break of  'Spuds Game'- StKilda vs Essendon- so keep your eyes peeled!
