Hands on Learning

Hands on Learning students have been busy rejuvenating the grounds around the cottage and working to support the school community.

Students have worked on several projects recently. They have planned and commenced developing a compost bay system with the aim of utilising this system more broadly within the school community. We have worked on designing and establishing a working farmers garden with the support of horticulture and gardening experts from our local Bunnings.

We have been very thankful for the support that the Bunnings community have provided, donating resources and their time for the benefit of our students.

Most recently, students have been working to build stage flats for the school theatre production of Mama Mia. This has been a great opportunity to give back to the school community by contributing to the stage design of this amazing in-house production.

On Friday 29th July, a group of students from Mornington Secondary College were on hand to plant 30 new trees in a developing area of the outer garden around the Lake. A brief demonstration was given before the students prepared ground, planted, barricaded, mulched and watered groups of Acacia cognata ‘Burgundy Cascade’ (River/Bower Wattle), Acacia iteaphylla (Flinders Range Wattle) and Corymbia ficifolia (Red Flowering Gum).

Students will also be participating in our own Mornington Secondary College tree planting day. On Thursday 18th August, with support from the Mornington Peninsula Shire, we will be planting 50 native species trees within and around the school grounds to support the regeneration of the local woodland and wetland habitat in our local community.

We are excited to keep the school community updated with information about these projects and have been impressed by the hard work and dedication that our students have shown to contribute to the program and form connections within their local community.
