Year 4 News
In Year 4 this term we have been learning about Indigenous culture and Indigenous perspectives. As part of this learning, we read some Dreamtime Stories. Dreamtime stories are stories that describe creation for Indigenous communities. We were so inspired by these stories, passed down over thousands of years, that we used our understanding of narratives and their structure to create our own Dreamtime Stories. In groups, we collaboratively planned, wrote and illustrated these stories and were able to share them with the Preps and Year 1's.
Here are some of our titles and front covers.
Year 5 Digital Museum
As part of their Inquiry Unit, 'Digital World', the Year 5 students have been learning about binary numbers and the ASCII code, input and output digital devices and old technology. The children invited the Year 4 students into their classroom to showcase their Digital Museum of old devices, and explained how these devices were used in their time and compared them to today's devices.
Year 3-6 Education in Human Sexuality
The Victorian Curriculum requires that all schools provide educational opportunities that support social and emotional learning across all levels of primary and secondary education. Schools should promote students' resilience, wellbeing and positive social attitudes, investigating topics that include respectful relationships, bullying, sexuality, risk taking and decision making. The Victorian Curriculum includes Health and Physical Education learning area and Personal and Social capabilty which primarily have the content descriptors and achievement standards related to these topics.
In addition, all Victorian schools must comply with Ministerial Order No. 870: Child Safe Standards in order to be registered, and remain registered, with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA). The Ministerial Order 870 came into effect on 1 August 2016 and specifies how every Victorian school must, in relation to the teaching of human sexuality, develop strategies to deliver appropriate education about healthy and respectful relationships (including sexuality).
We have engaged Body Safety Australia to provide our students with body safety, puberty and sexuality education in Term 3. To support ongoing conversations at home, we will be offering a 1-hour parent/carer workshop and encourage all Year 3-6 parents/carers to attend.
The Unique You Sexuality Education 1-hour information night will be held on Wednesday 20 July at 6:30pm in the MPR. An Operoo eform has been sent home for Year 3-6 families.
All classes (4 sessions for Year 3/4 and 5 sessions for Year 5/6) are delivered in an age-appropriate fashion in line with the Victorian Curriculum and Respectful Relationships Framework. Student classes will use storytelling, song, dance, games and group discussions to explore the following topics:
Emotions | Identifying and articulating emotions including our 'early warning signs' and our fear responses |
Families | What is the role of a family, who are our safe adults, how do we communicate our needs? |
Bodies | Naming genitals, bodily autonomy, private, personal and public body parts |
Babies | Conception, foetal development and birth including the many ways babies and children can be welcomed into families |
Communication | Communicating assertively and respecting verbal and non-verbal boundary setting |
Online Relationships (Year 5/6 only) | Who are our friends? What is respectful?
Senior students will also learn about the physical and emotional changes of puberty. |
