STEAM happenings

STEAM program at Koonung

This year, we have a focus on developing a new and vital STEAM Program at the College. "But what is STEAM?" I hear you ask. Good question. STEAM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art / Design, and Mathematics. A lot of future jobs will be in these areas, so as well as providing these subjects in traditional ways, we are working on strategies to invigorate and better integrate them in school life. Our STEAM focus in 2018 is on extra-curricular activities while we work on the development of curriculum pathways for 2019 and beyond.

Competitions and Clubs

There are many clubs and competitions open to students with an interest in STEAM. Some of these are available through the school, while others are off-site and independent. In February, Koonung students (1) learned about the Young Makers Club at Scienceworks, Spotswood,

(2) entered the Australian STEM Video Game Challenge, and

(3) heard from some young Engineering students who visited the school to talk about careers.

On Friday at lunchtime (March 9) we held a 'come and try' session for students interested in robotics and coding, which was run by our CSIRO STEM in Schools partner, Vela Georgiev. We had 14 very interested students participate.
