Sports Awards
The annual Sports Award presentations last week saw many Cumberland students recognised for the efforts in the sporting arena. The awards were based on the Interschool Sports Program, as well as the Carnivals and representative levels of various sports. Congratulations go to all students who received awards. Keara Calafiore and Lachlan Plant were acknowledged as the overall Cumberland Champions.
Cumberland Student Authors
Being able to write well is a key skill all students need and one staff at Cumberland are working hard to develop . Creative writing is underpinned by the five dimensions that research suggests are essential in fostering the development of creativity: inquisitiveness, imagination, collaboration, discipline and persistence. This is supported by Professor Robyn Ewing from Sydney University who states, “Strong creative thinking and learning skills are critical to students’ social and emotional wellbeing, academic achievement and lifelong learning.”
This year, a number of Cumberland students entered the Write 4 Fun writing competition, and we are proud to announce that Suveer Chahal, Taylor Lanteri, Lauren Potts, Alex Marmura, Christian Lin and George Ooi were successful in having their writing published in the annual Word Zone book. We congratulate these students on their proud achievement.
MY WAY
I sit pondering in my little corner
Wondering why oh why?
Why does it happen?
When will it end?
There is no answer…
What am I waiting for?
Get up and go
And make it happen my way
Everything is good
Everything is beautiful
I can change it. I can make it
I am the answer. I AM my way!

Year 5 Supports Eat Up Australia Project
On 16 November, Year 5 students will be making sandwiches for students in other schools who are less fortunate than them and who come to school each day without lunch. Year 5 have joined the Eat Up Australia cause by volunteering to make approximately 500 cheese or vegemite sandwiches for these children. This idea arose from their Religion and Values lessons when exploring Spirit-Filled Service. We could only get one day this year, but it is hoped that next year we can help this cause regularly. It is good for children to know they have the power to help others and that their efforts can make a difference. Great initiative Year 5!
