Mathematics Term Four

Can you believe that we are already into the second week of term four? For the first four weeks our students will be focusing on the following areas of their maths learning.

Number Focus:

Students will work in a variety of ways to find and identify a missing value, and the four processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Other number areas include focusing on square, prime and composite numbers.

Theme Focus:

Our maths theme focus is perimeter, area, volume & capacity. This focus may include activities such as calculating the perimeter of shapes and objects, the area and volume of shapes and drawing and measuring angles within shapes.

Term Four in maths also involves reflection and revision of concepts taught and learnt during the first three terms of 2019. This gives all students the opportunity to consolidate their understanding and skills in readiness for 2020.

Using perimeter and area in the workforce:

Did you know that you need perimeter to calculate how much track to order to fit it around an athletics field? Area and perimeter is used in many jobs without realising, for example it is used in Architecture and Interior design. If you were putting tiles in your house you would need to know the area of the size of the tiles and the area of your space.

We use a ruler to measure length of the sides of a small regular shape. The perimeter is determined by adding the lengths of the sides/edges of the shape. For small irregular shapes, we can use a string of thread and place it exactly along the boundary of the shape, once. We then measure the thread with a ruler to determine the perimeter.
