HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT HOSTING AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT?

The Rotary Club of Numurkah will be hosting an international student from Finland for 12 months, from July 2019 until June 2020. Tinja, who is 16 years old, will be attending Numurkah Secondary College during her time in Australia, probably in Years 11 and 12.

Rotary is looking for four families in the Numurkah district who would be willing to host Tinja in their home for a period of three months each. Ideally, families with school age children are preferred so she can become involved in as many ‘Aussie’ experiences as possible during her time with us. While she is fluent in both Finnish and Swedish languages, she also has a ‘good’ level of English.

International student exchange provides an opportunity to develop a lifetime of friendships and to learn about different cultures, for the visiting student, the host families and the broader community. If you host a student in your home, you give your children the opportunity to get to know and understand another culture, and to make a new friend from the other side of the world.

To become a Rotary host family, there are several conditions that must be met:

  1. The exchange student, Tinja, must have her own bedroom; this is especially important when she first arrives as so much will be new and different for her.
  2. All members of the hosting family who are 18 years or older must have a Working With Children check. This is a simple procedure that Rotary can assist you to obtain.
  3. This is not a paid hosting. All Rotary members are volunteers, so we do not pay families to host a student. However, the Rotary Club will provide a monthly allowance for Tinja to cover incidental expenses.
  4. A Rotary exchange student is expected to become a welcomed member of the family, sharing the responsibilities and participating in activities with other family members.

At all times during her visit, Tinja and her host families will be supported by members of the Rotary Club of Numurkah. She will have a club counsellor and will attend Rotary meetings and functions that will allow her to contribute to the work of Rotary in the community.

If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a host family for Tinja, or if you would like to discuss the options and expectations, please contact me as soon as possible. We will need to have our first two host families for this year organised within the next few weeks.

Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association

The Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association (GVFUA) has been serving local Australian Rules Football around the Goulburn Valley since 1958.

We are one of the largest umpiring groups in Australia with close to 220 active members, We have many female umpires as well as a multiculturally diverse environment which all members are made feel welcome. The GVFUA also has a strong emphasis on families and social interactivity, which in turn, engenders great camaraderie between members of all ages and their families.

We are affiliated with AFL Goulburn Murray, supplying Field, Boundary and Goal Umpires to the Goulburn Valley League, Murray Football League, Kyabram District Football League, Shepparton & Seymour Junior Football Leagues & the Northern Country Womens League. We officiate games at football venues in an area stretching from Deniliquin in the north, Mansfield in the east, Rochester in the west and Seymour in the south and everywhere in between.

Our Club Rooms are located at Packham St, Shepparton and we train on the magnificently prepared and maintained Chas Johnson Reserve on Tuesday and Thursday evenings under fantastic lights. We also have training bases in Echuca, Kyabram and Seymour where sessions commence at 6.00pm.

As part of AFL Community Umpiring week we are conducting a come & try day for anyone who may show some interest in umpiring football. Participants will get to wave flags, throw a boundary throw in and practice the umpire bounce! All this before a fun ‘What’s Your Decision’ quiz inside on the big screen. There is no cost to come & try and is a great experience for anyone who wants to learn more about the rules of Australian Rules Football, gain some extra fitness and earn some extra cash on a weekend!

Date: Thursday 2nd May 2019

Time: 6:00 – 8:00pm

Venue: Chas Johnson Reserve, Packham St, Shepparton.
