Celebrating Struggle and Sacrifice

Thank you to all our children, families and staff who represented Numurkah Primary School for the ANZAC March and service. We were very proud of the way the students represented the school and the respect they showed. Our school captains Connor and Keisha laid a wreath to commemorate the ANZACs and also attended the dawn Ceremony where they read a poem, 'In Flanders Fields'.

Over the break, I had the privilege of attending remembrance ceremonies at the Australia War Memorial in Canberra, the ANZAC eve ceremony at the MCG and our local service in Shepparton. There is such emotion at these events; in a veteran’s tears as he rose from his wheelchair to lay a wreath at the Pool of Remembrance; in the solemn silence as 72,000 people hold up their phone torches in the darkness; in standing with my young nephews as local school children line up to pay respect – all deeply moving and important to who we are as Australians.

ANZAC day is a day of respect; a day we remember to celebrate the struggles and the sacrifices. The ANZAC spirit is all about being better together; in facing unimaginable challenges surrounded by mates and never, ever forgetting those who willingly sacrifice and give themselves for others.

Lest we forget,

Tam
