If you know of students who love the outdoors and recreational lifestyle with possible opportunities to work at overseas summer camps, then this may be the course for them! This nationally recognised qualification may lead to careers as an Adventure Guide, Assistant Outdoor Guide, Outdoor Instructor, Youth Work - outdoor specialist, Camp Manager, Outdoor Educator, Program Manager to name a few.

This dual course is two Certificate IV courses rolled into one and involves a combination of theory and practice, and many exciting field trips.

*When checking fees against other training providers it is important to check that their fees include the materials fee and amenities fees. Some students have realised this AFTER commencing their course and have discovered in many cases Chisholm’s course was cheaper.

Dual Qualifications in Engineering

Our Engineering department are now offering a dual qualification to Chisholm apprentices completing a Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical or Fabrications).

Students have the option to increase employability skills by studying the Certificate IV Engineering in the evenings over 2 years. Streams available are CNC, Mechanical, Fabrication & Welding and Mechatronics. The course is offered at a fraction of the cost to make it more accessible for apprentices.

Law Week 2018

Law Week is an annual festival of events which makes learning about the law easy. Held in May each year, the seven-day program has something for everyone. This year Law Week will take place from Monday 14 May – Sunday 20 May 2018.

Students get to go behind the scenes of the Victorian legal system and check out what the law is all about. Find legal answers on everyday issues, attend mock-trials, attend mock bail-hearings, learn about the types of crimes that may be motivated by race or religion, and so much more.

Quality Indicators for Learning & Teaching (QILT)

The Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) website is now three years’ old. The aim of this website is to assist students in making informed choices about their higher education options by bringing together survey data from all Australian universities, allowing students to compare student experience and job outcomes.

So, students are able to compare the student experience, whether domestic or international, between universities, and also learn more about employment outcomes of the different institutions.

The QILT survey program also includes the Employer Satisfaction Survey (ESS) which is an important survey whereby over 4000 employers are asked to rate their newly employed university graduates, based on several criteria, and thereby ranking universities. The 2017 ESS Final Report is well-worth a browse.

New standards set to increase demand for financial planners

The Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority (FASEA) has established a set of regulations for the

education, training and ethics for new entrants to the profession and existing financial advisers. Under the new legislation, new financial advisers will be required to complete a degree, undertake a professional year and pass an exam. Existing advisers will need to undertake relevant further study in order to comply with these new standards or have a recognised transition pathway determined by the

Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority (FASEA) and pass an exam.

The banking royal commission has found that of the 25,000 current financial advisers in Australia, only 35% have the relevant qualifications as authorised by FASEA. Existing financial advisers must have a relevant university degree by January 1, 2024.

This presents a great opportunity for your students who may be considering a career in this area as existing financial advisers may be intending to retire or exit the industry, creating a demand for new advisers. Deakin’s Bachelor of Commerce (with a major in financial planning) is our flagship undergraduate business course and is satisfies the new FASEA requirements.

News from Victoria University Polytechnic

HOSPITALITY COURSES REOPEN AT VICTORIA POLYTECHNIC

VU Polytechnic’s Hospitality, Tourism and Events learning facilities are world class with three state-of-the-art commercial kitchens including individual stainless steel work stations and the latest cooking equipment. Featuring two demonstration kitchens, a training bar and restaurant seating up to 150 guests and multimedia laboratories, students train in an environment that closely simulates the workplace.

To further opportunities for workplace learning, the Polytechnic has key student placement partnerships with industry leaders such as The Mansion Hotel and Spa Werribee, TFE Hotels, Crown Melbourne, and The Radisson on Flagstaff Gardens.

VenU is our student-run restaurant at Footscray Nicholson Campus, providing a simulated work environment for hospitality students to refine their skills under the guidance of our expert teachers. VenU will be open to the public for lunch every Wednesday (and some Thursdays) until June 27.

NEW HOSPITALITY COURSES

Programs have now commenced in Hospitality Management and Commercial Cookery, with new courses starting from mid-semester:

SIT50316 Diploma of Event Management

Students will learn how to coordinate and manage effective, safe and engaging events, develop fundamental planning, communication and organisational skills, and acquire a detailed understanding of the event management process.

SIT50116 Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management

Students will develop the high-level skills required to manage travel and tourism operations and learn about business management in tourism and global trends related to industry operations.

INNOVATION TECHNOLOGY

VU Polytechnic’s NAO Robots impressed attendees at Wyndham Council’s inaugural WYNnovation Festival earlier this month. This exciting technology was featured at our exhibit and marquee in the Grand Prix Industry & Innovation Precinct.

STUDENT SUCCESSES IN THE ARTS

VU Polytechnic alumna and teacher Demet Divaroren’s debut novel Living on Hope Street (Allen and Unwin, 2017) has won the prize for Young Adult Literature in the 2018 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards.

As a Year 12 student, do you demonstrate leadership in your school or workplace, coordinate a community initiative, volunteer in a local cultural, sporting or religious group or provide care to someone in need? ACU's Community Achiever Program is designed to acknowledge commitment to our local communities.

The Community Achiever Program (CAP) recognises a students’ potential to achieve great things. A successful CAP application means a student could receive a provisional university offer as early as August to study at ACU. Being part of this CAP group also offers successful students unique opportunities to enhance their leadership and volunteering skills, while they study at ACU. Should an application be successful, the required ATARs would be as follows:

Change to arts degree entry requirements for 2019

The National School of Arts has revised the entry requirements into arts degrees. The changes set to take effect from Semester 1, 2019 include updating admission requirements, including course-level prerequisites for all arts courses, and adjusting the English prerequisite in Victoria to increase uniformity and equivalence across all universities. Suitability for teaching – non-academic requirements

Starting in 2018, teaching courses now include teacher suitability assessments, which assess both academic and non-academic qualities of all students applying for entry into a teaching degree. Find out all you need to know about this here.

HOW TO SCORE A LA TROBE SCHOLARSHIP

Every year we award scholarships to commencing and current students with a combined value in excess of $3 million. Scholarships can reward high achievers, encourage diversity and support the disadvantaged – there is a diverse mix available and they are released throughout the year.

Recently, we announced a range of scholarships for new and existing students involved with the La Trobe Elite Athlete Program (LEAP). Over 30 new athletes, who compete in sports ranging from athletics and swimming, to aerial skiing, will all receive a range of benefits such as academic support and access to funding as part of their membership to the program.

COMPETITIONS FOR YEAR 10 AND YEAR 11 STUDENTS

We’re excited to announce two competitions at La Trobe open to Year 10 and Year 11 students.

La Trobe University Young Writer’s Awards

Year 10 Victorian secondary school students and guest border schools are invited to get creative and enter an original short story or poem (800 – 1000 words) in this year’s competition.

The theme for submissions is one year later and there are great cash prizes available for first ($500), second ($250) and third ($125) place. Submissions open from Monday 16 July 2018 – head to our website for more information, terms and conditions.

Dream It, Plan It, Pitch It

Open exclusively to Year 11 Business Management students, students submit a business plan to the competition and then pitch their idea to judges at either a Melbourne or regional showcase in mid-July. Daily prizes will be awarded, along with the chance to win a grand prize of $1000.

The competition is this year open to Victorian guest LSES schools and those who have attended a La Trobe VCE Business Forum. An additional 10 school places are also available.

A CLEVER CHOICE: AGRICULTURAL STUDIES

Associate Degree in Engineering Technology

RMIT University offers the Associate Degree in Engineering Technology which is an excellent 2-year degree for students undecided which specialised area of Engineering they wish to study. Students who achieve a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 out of 4.0 are guaranteed entry with two years of credit (equivalent to 192 credit points) into the following RMIT programs relevant to their study major. This pathway course is also often used by students who do not attain the minimum English/EAL and Maths Methods study scores, or if their ATAR is not high enough to enter the bachelor degree. Students keen on telecommunications engineering can also use this pathway course, by completing the Electrical and Electronics major.

Monash Scholars Program

The Monash Scholars Program is a prestigious program for high achieving secondary school students. The program gives prospective students a unique head start into university life by providing opportunities for personal and academic development. The program also provides students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make decisions about future study options and enables them to build a network of peers, academic, and employment contacts.

The Scholars Program is suitable for students in the top 10% of their cohort, are university-focused, and who demonstrate leadership ability and a willingness to contribute to their community. Students begin the program in Year 10, continuing on through years 11 and 12.

Careers in Health Information Management

According to the Good Universities Guide*, Health Information Managers combine knowledge of healthcare processes, health records and administration, information management and human resource management to provide services that meet the medical, legal, ethical and administrative requirements of the healthcare system.

Duties & tasks of a Health Information Manager include -

planning and developing health information systems for various types of healthcare facilities, including computerised patient identification systems, coding and analysis of diseases and procedures, and the design of health record forms
revising and testing the effectiveness of existing health information record services in hospitals and other healthcare facilities
developing and implementing new policies and procedures for handling health information in accordance with professional ethics, institutional requirements and relevant legislation, including the Freedom of Information Act
controlling the transfer of relevant health service data to state health departments
assisting with medical research and healthcare projects

Careers as an Architect

Architects use creativity and a practical understanding of structures and materials to develop concepts, plans, specifications and detailed drawings for buildings and other structures. They negotiate with builders and planning authorities, administer building contracts and inspect work that has been carried out. To become an architect, you usually have to complete an accredited degree in architecture. This usually consists of a degree in arts or design with a major in architecture, followed by a Master of Architecture. Completion of a Master’s degree meets the academic requirements for registration as an architect in Australia. Good Universities Guide - Architecture

The duties of an architect include –

meeting with clients or builders to discuss their requirements and prepare a design brief
prepare sketches, production drawings and detailed drawings by hand or using computer-aided design (CAD) software
combine structural, mechanical and artistic elements into a building's design, such as decks and atriums, lifts, air conditioning systems and decorative finishes
discuss designs and cost estimates with clients and others involved in the project
obtain necessary approvals from authorities
prepare specifications and contract documents for builders, tradespeople and legal advisers

Sometime students opt to become an Architectural Draftsperson and this role involves completing architects' and other designers' concepts by preparing documents (drawings or plans) and liaising with builders and contractors - Good Universities Guide - Architectural Draftsperson. Most often, a TAFE qualification – Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) – is required to fulfil this role, and in Victoria this diploma is offered at a number of institutions including Box Hill Institute, Holmesglen Institute, Federation University, RMIT University, Swinburne University, and Victoria University.

Successful architectural drafts people need to -

* be able to visualise ideas in three-dimensional form

* enjoy technical drawing and working with technology

* be able to draw neatly and accurately

* have good concentration and attention to detail

* have some artistic talent in freehand drawing

In the case of either of these two roles, both include liaising with other designers and specialists throughout the building process, such as structural and civil engineers; electrical, mechanical and hydraulic consultants; builders; surveyors; and landscapers.

· The Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus is home to the Geelong Technology Precinct. The precinct focuses on Deakin's core research capabilities in materials, biotechnology, chemistry, and environmental engineering, along with regional strengths in manufacturing and agri-processing.

· The Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus is also home to the CADET building – the Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training. The $55 million state-of-the-art facility houses some of the most advanced and future-focused simulation and visualisation systems, purpose-built interactive laboratories and learning environments in the country.

· 2015 saw the first intake of students to the new 4-year Medical Imaging course offered at the Waurn Ponds Campus - Medical Imaging. · Deakin University's Faculty of Health offers Australia's first accelerated optometry course. Offered as a combined course, the Bachelor of Vision Science/Master of Optometry - Optometry. Students have access to a dedicated simulated optometry store for simulated exercises. Deakin Optometry is housed in the Regional Community Health Hub (REACH) building.

· Deakin’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences - Exercise & Sport Science - is also in the REACH building. Again, exercise & sport science students have access to state-of-the-art equipment. There are a squillion jobs that can begin with an apprenticeship or traineeship. (Well, maybe I exaggerate!)

You can search through over 3000 examples of apprenticeship and trainee occupations on this free app.

Look Out… While the app doesn’t show real jobs, it does give you an idea of the type of apprenticeships & traineeships you can do, and this gives you the power to negotiate with your current boss, or a future one. (aka, show them the AAP APP and ask them if they can turn your job into a traineeship or apprenticeship. Simples!)

Heck, if you are going to work for money, you may as well turn it into a qualification along the way!

Don’t you think that having qualifications under your belt makes you rather attractive to employers? (Sorry, that sounds kinda creepy – but you know what I mean!) This, in turn, makes job seeking (for the future you) far easier.
