Improving student writing across the College

All teachers at Cranbourne East Secondary College are committed to enhancing the writing skills of every student. These skills are extremely important to the way that your children will communicate their ideas and important information during their studies and throughout their lives.

Through a series of professional learning workshops in Term One, teaching teams have worked through a range of data and evidence to learn more about how and where we can best support students to develop their written skills.

On the recent Curriculum Day (Friday 18th May), teachers developed their knowledge and skills in teaching writing skills. Teachers from all learning areas participated in this learning, as we are all teachers of literacy regardless of the subject we teach.

The focus of the sessions will be around the ‘Six Traits of Writing’. This is a way of teaching, modelling, and assessing writing.  The ‘Six Traits of Writing’ are Ideas, Organisation, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency and Conventions. This approach creates a common vocabulary and guidelines for teachers to use with students so that they become familiar with the terms and use them to focus the improvements in their writing.

As this approach is being used in all Year 7 to Year 10 English classes, perhaps you can ask your son or daughter to tell you a little bit more about them at dinner. By explaining them to someone else, this will also deepen their understanding of the concepts.

If you would like to learn a little more, there are many resources available on the Internet. This link will take you to a short summary of each of the traits - https://goo.gl/4narRU (Prezi) or https://youtu.be/oAp5w-ZKeXk (Short YouTube clip)

Inclusion at Cranbourne East SC

Cranbourne East Secondary College (CESC) works hard to provide an inclusive, safe, secure and stimulating learning environment for all students.  We recognise young people can reach their full educational potential only when they are happy, healthy and safe, and when there is a positive school culture to engage and support them in their learning.  Our school acknowledges that student wellbeing and student learning outcomes are inextricably linked.

To ensure we have an inclusive environment, our inclusion team includes an Assistant Principal, Leading Teacher, Student Services Leader and over 10 staff in our wellbeing and integration team. The team has been instrumental in the success of programs such as Indigenous Art Club, ERP (Effective Reading Program), Lift Off, Doctors in Secondary School, Multi Rep Club, Celebrating Multiculturalism with a Multicultural Day, Close the Gap and RU Ok Day? to list only a few.

We provide a broad range of educational opportunities to cater for all students and our teachers work collectively to ensure that all students feel valued and cared for, have meaningful opportunities to contribute to the College, and can effectively engage with their learning. Our curriculum and programs are designed to be engaging and inclusive while also recognising and responding to the diverse needs of our students.  More details on our Wellbeing and Inclusion practices can be found in our Wellbeing and Inclusion Policy.

Cranbourne East Secondary College’s vision is to “giving every student, every opportunity to exceed their potential by providing a high quality pathway to success.”  This ethos is built on the following values:

     • Respect

     • Growth

     • Achievement

     • Responsibility

Celebrating every students’ success is an important part of our school culture. To support student success, we have a whole school rewards program that’s just been rolled out.

Whole School Rewards Program

We have recently rolled out our Whole School Rewards Program, which is a whole school formal scheme that recognises the efforts and achievements of all our students. The program is directly linked to our 4 school values and students have the opportunity to be awarded a Values card, related an outstanding behaviour or achievement. Year Level Assemblies will be held throughout each term and these gatherings will allow students who are awarded Value Cards to be recognised and accomplishments celebrated.

When a student receives a Values Card, parents will receive a text message and a compass notification and students will be encouraged to take their Cards home to show their parents.

We encourage parents to generate conversation at home that relates to our values and being rewarded with a card.

Student Teachers

CESC hosted 47 pre-service teachers from Monash, Deakin, Victoria and Melbourne Universities over the past three weeks.  These student teachers worked across many curriculum areas of the school and participated in the Breakfast Club, Homework Club and Indigenous Art Club. They attended staff professional learning sessions and Student Voice meetings.
