Career Counselling
As part of the Department of Education and Training new career education reform, our College has implemented the compulsory Year 9 Career Advisory Service to all Year 9 students during weeks 9 and 10 of Term 2 and weeks 1 and 2 of 3 of Term 3.
The career advisory service consisted of:
- Every Year 9 student completing the Morrisby online personal career discovery tool that identified potential suitable career pathways for students. This profiling was undertaken during our Year 9 English program over a two week period. Students were supported by a team of McGuire staff including Careers, teaching, integration and multicultural staff. Every Year 9 student that completed the Morrisby online tool received a printed career assessment report.
- A follow up 30 minute one-on-one career counselling interview (with external Careers Practitioners) was conducted with each Year 9 students completed the Morrisby online tool during weeks 1 and 2 of this term to discuss the students’ assessment report. This interview provided valuable feedback to the students about their possible pathway areas, as well provided an outline of subjects for them to explore as part of their subject selection process.
Whilst the students found the profiling part of the Careers Advisory Service quite challenging, the feedback from students, staff and families from the interview process has been extremely positive. It was wonderful to see the students so engaged in the interviews. The students found the information contained in the reports greatly reflected their personalities, skills and talents. The feedback provided to students at the interviews further reinforced this and provided the students with a valuable insight into their subject selections for not only the year ahead but the years beyond.
Overall, at the conclusion of the service, the students and families were really pleased to be involved in the process and could see how the profiling was an important process to provide the students with the valuable data that informed the interview process that they all enjoyed so much.
Well done to all our Year 9 students that participated in the process – you are commended on keeping it REAL during this new and challenging program.
