House Athletics
This Wednesday August 21st, saw the final ever McGuire House Athletics Carnival. The event was held in windy conditions with the threat of rain ever present at the Shepparton Athletics Track. Despite the less than favorable conditions, the students and staff took to the day with enthusiasm and vigor. There was plenty of colour on display as everyone involved got into the spirit of the day displaying their house colours with pride.
Competition got underway at 10 am and as the day went on the dark clouds slowly lifted and the threatening skies of the morning were replaced by sunny conditions, heralding the impending arrival of spring. With the smell of sausages barbecuing and coffee brewing, the mood of all involved remained high throughout the day. As expected, the competition was tight, and some fantastic performances were recorded. There were 4 school records that were broken, that will now remain McGuire records for all time.
Kain Nicholls set a record in the U/13 shot put with a throw of 12.3m, breaking the existing record which had stood since 1997.
Annas Elnour equaled the boys U/16 high jump record with a leap of 1.70m. The jump equals a record set in 1996.
Sophie Doherty set a record in the U/13 triple jump with a jump of 9.32m, breaking the previous record of 9.07m set in 2017.
Crane set a new 4 x 100m U/13 boys relay record of 59.85, lowering the old mark of 1.00.60 set by Swan in 1995.
Congratulations to the record breakers on your fantastic achievements. You’ll be able to look back with pride in years to come as these records will never be broken. 2020 represents an opportunity for all students to get brand new records at a new school. An opportunity I’m sure many student from McGuire will take.

Hume Region Soccer
Senior Boys Soccer
On Tuesday 13th August, Mr De Smit led our Senior Boys soccer team to the Hume Region finals. Our team gained a late call up to the competition despite finishing second at the local Goulburn Murray district event. Given the opportunity to compete for a spot at the State Championships our boys jumped at the opportunity, acquitting themselves admirably. The team ultimately found the competition to be a big step up and they were unable to progress to the next level. Despite this, Mr De Smit and the boys can be proud of their efforts and take encouragement from the way they conducted themselves both on and off the pitch.

Year 8 Boys Soccer
On Thursday 15th August, our Year 8 boys soccer team ventured to McEwen Reserve to represent McGuire College at the Hume Region finals. Having been runners up in 2018 in the Year 7 competition our team were keen to go one step further and progress to the State Championships. Mr Reid led the boys who jumped out of the blocks, dominating their first two games to set up a final game showdown against Galen College; a repeat of the 2018 final.
McGuire dominated the early going in the final game and leading 3 – 1. Unfortunately, Galen College were able to overrun our boys to get the win 4 – 3. The match was a high-quality affair with very little separating the two sides. Our boys should take great heart from their performance, despite the loss, showing great sportsmanship and humility throughout.
