Level 3/4

The last two weeks have been very exciting with so much learning taking place both inside and outside the classroom!

Last week the Year 4s went on an excursion to Scienceworks. The students had such a fantastic day exploring all kinds of scientific information and working on their own design projects.

First, they visited a few of the Scienceworks exhibitions, including 'Sportsworks'. In 'Sportsworks', students learnt about the science behind the way our bodies move when we are doing different activities. Both exhibitions included lots of awesome, interactive components.

Next, students took part in a STEM challenge which required them to build their own rollercoasters. They learnt about the science behind how rollercoasters work and were then challenged to build their own rollercoasters, complete with loop-the-loop! This was lots of fun!

The final visit was to the Planetarium, where students learnt all about the Earth's tilt and how it affects the seasons we experience here on Earth. This also included an amazing insight into the Melbourne night sky and some of the constellations visible to them in their own backyards.

All in all, it was a wonderful couple of days and it was awesome to be out on an excursion and learning lots of new and exciting things.

It was equally as exciting and creative in the classroom during the last two weeks. While pretending to be town planners, Level 4 students not only used Critical Thinking and Creativity but also applied their learning of 3D shapes, length, area and perimeter to draw their dream community on a grid paper to tackle the Maths Portfolio task. This was a great opportunity for our students to connect Maths to real world situations and realise that Maths makes sense and is useful in their everyday lives. Now they have started working in small groups to plan for our STEM Project where they will collaborate, communicate, generate ideas and problem solve to first design, and then build their dream community using cardboard bases and recycled materials.

Level 3 and 4 students have been learning how to apply various mental and written strategies to work out multiplication problems, in a way that works best for them.

In our Reading sessions, both Levels 3 and 4 have been discovering what thick and thin questions are, and the appropriate times to ask them when reading both familiar and unfamiliar texts. The grammar focus has been on adverbs and verbs for Level 4.

Our writing sessions have focussed on improving our narrative writing by using the ‘show don’t tell’ strategy, and trying to make our writing more interesting with some dynamic dialogue. Level 4 had ‘paper fights’ with partners to practise how characters might converse back and forth in a narrative using the correct punctuation. Our Resilience Project sessions have been exploring the concept of emotional literacy, and how we can better express and recognise the emotions we are feeling.

Finally, a huge congratulations to those who competed in District cross country. We represented Rangeview well and won the most amount of points overall. Congratulations to those students who move onto Division this week, we wish you all the best!
