Level 1
Level 1 really made a splash during our 5-day swimming program at Aquanation! It was fantastic to see (and hear!) the children having fun while working on their swimming skills and practising important water safety techniques.
We also kept active last week at our third basketball clinic. The children worked on controlling the ball, dribbling down the court and played a number of games focusing on team work and communication. It was fantastic to spend time out in the sun and get some fresh air. Thank you again to Mr Clark for organising these sessions.
In Reading, we have continued to build on our knowledge of the strategies that help us to read accurately. The children enjoyed chunking words into parts and identifying smaller words inside bigger words. We have also focused on flipping vowel sounds, skipping words and reading on, together with trading words with other words to ensure a sentence makes sense. The children can use their special bookmarks to support the use of these strategies during independent reading time.
We’ve focused on punctuation over the last few weeks, exploring capital letters, full stops, commas, question marks and quotation marks. The children used macaroni to show where quotation marks belong in a sentence, and practiced adding dialogue to their narrative writing. Punctuation is an important element of our 5 Star Writing Checklist and the children are learning how to improve their punctuation during the editing process.
In Mathematics, we have been learning all about the value and features of Australian coins. The children had fun playing ‘Which Coin Am I?’, keeping each other guessing as to which coin they were hiding in their hand. They sorted coins into order according to their value and practised adding various coins together and matching this with a total amount.
The Year 1 classrooms have some new additions, in the form of robots! As we progress through our Inquiry topic ‘Change Over Time’, the children have outdone themselves with their design (and redesign) of a robot of the future that can help them do something. There is a lot of excitement around the robots so here are just a few photos of the early stages of building – the end results cannot yet be revealed!! The children have insisted on this!!
To commemorate National Sorry Day on May 26th, we made native hibiscus flowers (also known as the desert rose). The native hibiscus has been adopted as the symbol for this day as it is found widely across Australia and is a survivor. The children are very proud of their beautiful creations which are now on display in our classrooms.
