St Simon's Acknowledgement of Country Project

Wominjeka means ‘welcome’ in the language of the Bunurong and Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. The City of Knox which takes in the Rowville area (St Simon’s) is part of the Kulin cultural nation. It stands on the edge of the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri and Bunurong.

We are excited to announce that we are developing our very own St Simon’s Acknowledgement of Country, created by a small group of students. An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity for everyone at St Simon the Apostle to show respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.

The students involved in this unique project are Hunter Macchi, Marica Coburn, Sarah Anderson, Lauren Anderson, Larissa Pitruzzello, Alexander Matulic, Olivia Guiliano and Zac Harvey.

Although Phil Solari and I are working closely with the students on this project, the acknowledgement will be written by students using their own words, read by students and most importantly owned by the students of St Simon the Apostle.

We will be incorporating our Acknowledgement of Country in our staff meetings, school assemblies and other school events as we believe it’s important to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners of land and show respect.

We will keep you posted with future updates on this project!
