Japanese Cooking
Year 7 - 10
Over the last couple of weeks, our students of Japanese have been busy in the kitchen making Japanese Totoro Rice Ball, Teriyaki Chicken, Okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury pancake) and Sushi! おいしかった!(Oishikatta! - "It was delicious!"). Please see the photos and student reflections below!
The Year 7E, 7F and 7G Japanese class had their very first cooking class at Beaumaris Secondary Collage and we all had a BLAST!
We walked into the kitchen for the first time, and we do not think any of us could hold our excitement. We watched Yamane Sensei and Angela (the cooking assistant) show us how to make the Totoro rice ball and teriyaki chicken. We all bounced in excitement, waiting for our turn in the kitchen.
We got into a pair of 2 and once we got to our stations, we looked at the recipes on the table and chose which one of us would make the teriyaki chicken or if we wanted to make the Totoro rice balls. Then we swapped the roles. The Totoro rice balls were not that easy to make, the teriyaki chicken was also very hard. It was so fun, while also offering some challenges. When we did not understand something, we asked around and we were collaborative. We would love to do it again some time and express our passions towards the Japanese culture!

The Year 8E, 8F and 8G Japanese class this week had a fun time making sushi in the kitchens. With the help of Yamane Sensei and Angela, we all made Nigiri Sushi using chicken, avocado, tuna, cucumber and, of course, rice and seaweed. To start, we made oval balls of rice and added cooked chicken schnitzel or tuna, mixed with kewpie mayonnaise. Next, we added our choice of vegetable and finally wrapped it up with a strip of seaweed. After cleaning our messy kitchen bench workstations, we all ate our delicious Nigiri together. Overall, it was a great experience for everyone and we all hope we can make more future Japanese dishes in the kitchen!

On Wednesday 8 June our class made okonomiyaki, which is a kind of Japanese pancake made with cabbage and squid. We made okonomiyaki by making a batter using water, flour, and eggs. Then we added dashi to add an umami flavour. Next, we mixed cabbage and squid into the mixture and added it to a hot pan. This was the hardest part because the batter often fell apart. But it was worth the work because the okonomiyaki tasted very good, and the Ramune (lemonade) we had with it was also delicious. Overall, it was a really fun experience to try cooking Japanese food, and I think it was a great way to learn more about Japanese culture.

On the 3 June, our Year 10 Japanese class spent our class time in the kitchen making okonomiyaki. Okonomiyaki is a Japanese dish similar to pancakes, but unlike pancakes, it is a savory dish that contains vegetables, carbs, and protein. They took about 45 minuets to make, and for the rest of the session we got to enjoy the delicious treats we made with a bottle of 'Ramune', a Japanese variation of Lemonade.
