'Hearth' Excursion

Year 9, 10 & 11

The Year 9/10 Drama Specialism and Year 11 Theatre Studies class attended a performance of the play 'Hearth' at La Mama Courthouse Theatre in Carlton in preparation for their upcoming PBL and Outcome 3 Assessment.

Set in 2009 against the backdrop of Australia’s ‘Black Saturday’ bushfires, 'Hearth' tells the story of a family and their attempt to stay connected during a time of great change. The events of a significant birthday see tensions start to rise between Tom and his older brother Matthew, along with the temperature outside, and before the ice-cream cake has time to melt, a deeply held family secret is revealed.

The students were excited to be attending a live theatre performance in the heart of Carlton, and to have the opportunity to speak with the cast and creative team after the performance in a post-show forum. The engaging and dramatic play was visually stunning with the students excitedly discussing the set, lighting and sound design after the show, as well as being in awe of the outstanding performances by the actors. Our BSC students asked interesting and thought-provoking questions in the post-show forum, with reference in particular to the symbolism of certain design choices.

After attending the performance, the students enjoyed wandering down Lygon Street and tasting the delicious Italian dessert, cannoli from Brunetti's bakery. It was a fantastic day out for all!
