Girls Hockey Report
After two disrupted seasons, it was wonderful to see our hockey players back on the field over the weekend. It was great to have so many of our experienced players return but equally exciting was the number of new faces.
The B Grade women had a tough first round encounter, facing reigning premiers Demons. This was a very even contest with a 1-1 result indicative of the game. Thank you to Milly Howells and Jorjia Hermon for filling in and well done to Mrs Abbie Cameron on making her hockey debut. Strong players on the day were Millie Davidson, Hettie Byrne and Georgia Adams.
A very new A Grade team faced the experienced Coleraine women and were well defeated. Well done to Portia Northcott for her excellent game for Coleraine. The A Grade side has welcomed several new faces this season and we are excited to see their hockey develop under the captaincy of Lucy Roberts. Emily McNaughton was simply brilliant in goals and probably saved 20 goals! Lucy Roberts was a standout on the half line and she was well supported by Ashleigh McNaughton, Lily Cush and Sarah Andersen.

With six players competing at this level for the first time and limited preparation, the match against reigning premiers, the Bulls, was always going to pose challenges to a young side. When we discovered we had no goalkeeper for the match the challenges grew! Nonetheless, I was tremendously proud of the effort and endeavour of the boys last Friday.
Yes, we were thumped on the scoreboard, 1-10, but impressively, I felt the boys did not drop their heads and kept working. So much so that Ciaran Nelson was able to score our first goal for the season late in the game.
I am confident we will score many more as we gel more, train more and believe more in each other. There were good signs as the boys sought to bring each other into the game. More passes will find their targets as the year goes on.
Particular thanks should be expressed to Tyler Butcher and Harley Milich. Each played half the game as stand in goalkeepers; neither could be blamed for any of the goals scored against us and both showed some good form when playing without the pads on also.
I am not going to name particular players as “our best” but look forward to the team developing into a strong cohesive unit over the next weeks.
