Deputy Principal, Teaching and Learning

What is NAPLAN?

NAPLAN stands for National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy and is an annual formal assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in Australian schools.

NAPLAN tests skills such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and numeracy.  The focus of NAPLAN is to assess learning progress. Classroom teachers use NAPLAN data to inform their teaching and assist in planning a relevant program for all students.

Whilst students can be exempted from one or more NAPLAN tests if they have significant or complex disability, or if they are from a non-English-speaking background and arrived in Australia less than one year before the tests, the school does encourage participation in the program. NAPLAN tests are a routine part of our academic school calendar and help promote good exam routines and practice for all our students.

Parent support of NAPLAN: How can I help my child?

  • Regular routines at home that include getting good sleep and eating a substantial breakfast.
  • Make sure their school issued laptop is fully charged on the test day and they have set of head/earphones.
  • Encourage students to have a go and be willing to attempt all parts of the test is important.
  • Ensure that your child can ask any question they might have about the NAPLAN test. Your child’s teacher or mentor will be able to assist.

If possible, ask to see what a test paper (online) might look like. Past test papers can be accessed here: https://www.acara.edu.au/assessment/naplan/naplan-2012-2016-test-papers
