Sustainability News

Ms Belinda Nechwatal, Sienna, Thien An & Henry

Hi everyone! We had some great discussions about recycling and sustainability today, prompted by a surprise find of 15 bottles of out of date water, found in storage. We poured the water on the garden and flattened the bottles for recycling. We discussed how Australians throw away around 1 billion plastic water bottles are thrown away, while only 30% are recycled – that means 700 million plastic water bottles end up in landfill or floating in the ocean annually. It takes around 700 years for them to decompose and they have been shown to leach chemicals into the water being drunk. Eek! Always, always pack a reusable drink bottle – this way our children keep hydrated, our environment is supported and we avoid drinking those plastic nasties.

Gardening Fun!

The children decided our chives were yummy, tasted fresh picked from the garden! We picked lots of lettuce, parsley and chives and I expect there will be some yummy salads for dinner tonight! We would love to see any photos of our produce being cooked for dinner!  If you take a photo, please send to bnechwatal@tcs.catholic.edu.au.

Things we need!

Do you have any spare paper bags we could use to bring home our vegetables? We could also use small plant pots. Please leave at the office, labelled “Miss Belinda”. Thank you!

What is Nude Food?

‘Nude food’ is food that comes to school without disposable packaging – extra plastic bags, paper bags, wrappings, plastic water bottles or cling wraps. Australia is the second highest producer of rubbish per person in the western world! Unfortunately school lunches are contributing to this, with the average child generating around 30 kg of rubbish a year. We can do our part to reduce this by packing a school lunch without including any extra packaging or juice packs.Make a conscious decision to only include foods that leave no packaging at the end of the day. Put the sandwich or bread roll into a named lunchbox and use small containers for any snack foods and of course, pack a reusable drink bottle.

A new record for our Nude Food lunches!

5/6FA hit a new record this week, with 20 rubbish free lunches! They were followed closely by 3/4TR with 16, 5/6MG and 1/2TB with 11, 1/2UR and PrepCD with 10 and PrepRT with 6 rubbish free lunches,

Some yummy ideas - a sandwich/wrap/roll, pasta with vegetables, soup, frittata or sushi, a fruit or vegetable snack, such as whole fruit, cut up veggie sticks, fruit or savoury kebab or a small salad.

There is a great booklet of ideas here
