SOUTHERN GRAMPIANS AND GLENELG (SGG) PRIMARY SCHOOL HEALTH BEHAVIOURS MONITORING STUDY, 2023

Our Year 2, 4 and 6 students have again been invited to participate in the SSG Health Behaviours Monitoring Survey. This study was conducted in 2015, 2017 and 2019 as part of the Deakin managed WHOSTOPS study, incorporating local initiatives SEA Change Portland, GenR8 Change (Southern Grampians Local Government Area) and Hands Up Casterton and aims to evaluate long-term changes in healthy weight and associated behaviours among school children in Years 2, 4 and 6 in our community.

In recent years, several initiatives have been implemented to reduce chronic disease and improve the health of the Victorian population. These have included a particular focus on encouraging healthy eating and physical activity and reducing overweight and obesity in children and young people.

SSG plan to collect the following information from all assenting students during normal class times:

  1. Complete a self-report recall survey regarding participation in physical activity and sedentary behaviour, dietary intake and perceived quality of life (all participants) (Years 4 and 6 only) (35min).
  2. Have measurements taken of their height and weight and students will be fitted with a small watch-sized activity monitor (like a Fitbit) (<5 min per child) (Year 4 and Year 6).

Measurements will be taken in school hours in a sensitive, culturally appropriate and respectful manner. This research is being supported by Western District Health Service and will be carried out in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2007 – Updated 2009 which is produced by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia.

Years 2, 4 and 6 parents have been sent consent information via Operoo.
