Year 6-7 Transition to secondary school

On Wednesday, all students who will be attending a government secondary school in 2024 received a confirmation letter. Attached to this letter was an acceptance form. Could you please return the acceptance form to your child’s classroom teacher no later than Wednesday 9th August.

Interschool Sport

After a number of false starts, the weather finally cleared and the Year 5 and 6 students were able to spend a day playing a variety of sports against other local schools. Please read below for some match summaries.

Soccer

As part of our Winter Sports Carnival, Mr Samothrakitis and Mrs McConachy took three Vermont Teams to Mahoney’s Reserve to compete against Livingstone Primary School. Despite the icy winds it was fantastic to see all students playing fairly, cheering on other teams and displaying excellent sportsmanship. Not one complaint was heard from students as the rain crept towards us, only cheers, congratulations and smiles all round for a fantastic day organised by our amazing PE teacher, Mr Walsh.

Rounders

On the Interschool Sports Day, we went to Mahoney’s Reserve to play Rounders. Lots of people from other schools also came to play. Although a lot of people in our team were new to the experience, we enjoyed a wonderful day. Some of us even scored home runs! We also won a match against one of the other schools! Overall, it was a terrific and enjoyable day. Thanks to all of the teachers who helped out.

AFL

The school football team had some tough games against the other schools but in the end we came together and put up a really strong performance. Every team worked hard to win and share around the footy to their mates. The sportsmanship was phenomenal along with the cheering of people from other schools. The teamwork was incredible and overall it was a great day and lots of fun playing footy with your mates.

TBall

On a cold and blustery Winter’s Day, Vermont Primary School competed in TBall against a range of other schools. Everyone from Vermont showed amazing sportsmanship and encouraged not only the players on their own team but to the opposition as well.

It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces as people took amazing catches, hit the ball with enthusiasm or made it to home base. Every team experienced success on the day and we wish the team(s) that have progressed to Division the best of luck. Many thanks to Ms Pittas, Mr Tran, Mr Walsh and Mr Sadler for their expertise on the day.

T-ball was great fun for the girls. We loved playing T-ball and versing Livingstone, Whitehorse and Orchard Grove. We played at Ballyshannassy Park. It was cold and windy so that stopped the ball going too far. All the scores were really close. A big thank you to Miss Pittas and Mr. Walsh for organizing T-ball.

Netball

At this year’s Netball Winter Interschool Sports everyone had a great time and overall it was a joyful day. It was absolutely freezing but everyone stayed warm with blankets and jumpers. When we arrived everyone was nervous and excited for their first game. The games were filled with excitement and teamwork, and great sportsmanship. During one of my games I (Mahima) was goal-shooter and I remember getting ready to shoot a goal when there was shouts of encouragement from the other Vermont team who were watching. It made me feel confident and I managed to score a goal. As the ball went into the goal, there was a great shout of celebration from the team watching. It was really nice to hear and made me feel happy. We had a busy but fun day and we enjoyed it.

Digital Footprint Webinar

Next Thursday, Year 6 students will take part in an online webinar where students will learn how to maintain respectful online relationships. It will feature SuperCar driver Chaz Mostert and will help provide students with the tools they need for positive, responsible and safe experiences online. This has close links to the text we are currently reading in class together and is always a relevant issue for students heading into high school. Please have a chat to your child about what they heard, as well as how their current online relationships are going.

Flip Project

This term, Grade 6 students are completing a FLIP project. FLIP stands for ‘Financial Literacy in Practice’. Students will be choosing an area of Maths/Finance that interests them and will have an hour a week in school to research, collate and present their information. Some students may need to access websites and resources that aren’t available at school, so your assistance here would be appreciated. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Science

This week, the Year 5 students began their new Science Unit, in which they are investigating physical and chemical change. They will be conducting a series of experiments involving a variety of substances and then recording their observations. Towards the end of the term, they will use their observations in an attempt to discover the identity of some mystery powders. These experiments and observations will also be showcased at the VERMONT PRIMARY SCHOOL SCIENCE EXPO - 8th SEPTEMBER - 3:00 - 5:00 - IN THE STADIUM

Coding Challenge

This term the 5/6 students will have the opportunity to participate in an optional coding challenge run by the National Computer Science School & GROK Learning called the NCSS Challenge. It is an online challenge for students looking to extend their coding skills. It starts on Monday 31st July and can be completed online in their own time. For 5 weeks the students are given notes and problems containing all the information they need to complete the week’s programming challenges using either Blockly (block-based program) or Python (for experienced programmers only). Those who are interested in participating in the challenge can do so from home, but will also have the option of support from myself during Coding Club on a Monday lunchtime. If your child is interested in participating in this opportunity please CLICK HERE to register their interest so that I can set up an account for them. This must be done by 3:30pm Thursday 27th July

Students who take up the option of this challenge will be responsible for completing the online tasks themselves. I am happy to support them on a Monday lunchtime, but will not be checking to see that this extra work has been completed. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
