Welcome to Term 3:

We hope this newsletter finds you well, and we are thrilled to share some exciting upcoming events at our school that your Year 3 and 4 children will be participating in.

Book Week:

This year, we are celebrating the magic of books with a captivating theme, 'Read, Grow, Inspire'

On Monday 21st August, we invite all Year 3 and 4 students to come dressed as their favourite book characters. We encourage creativity and imagination! Additionally, students can bring the book that inspired their costume so they can share their love for reading with their classmates.

As well, this year we will be holding a writing competition. The topic for the writing competition is Grow. Please see the 'Literacy' tab concerning more information about Book Week and the competition.

Year 4 Puppet Incursion:

Our Year 4 students are in for an exciting day as they immerse themselves in a Puppet Incursion as part of their inquiry-based learning!

The children will attend a puppet-making workshop where they will be involved in making their own puppets. It promises to be an educational and fun-filled experience that will enrich their understanding of various topics covered in class.

The cost of this workshop is $16.00 per student. The Puppet Workshops will be held on the 17th and 18th of August 2023.

All payments are via Qkr and must be completed by Thursday 10th August.

Similarly, next week the students will be making a puppet out of a sock in class. To complete the task they will need to bring their own sock from home that they don’t mind being altered, decorated, cut up etc.

The sock needs to be long enough to cover their forearm and ideally be white or light in colour to make decorating it with colours easy.

If you could help your child to pack an appropriate sock to be brought to school by next Monday that would be great.

ICAS

A final reminder in this newsletter about the ICAS competitions this year.

What is ICAS?

ICAS is an online academic competition that is designed to assess students’ higher order thinking and problem-solving skills.

Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student who participates will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals.

We encourage you to consider entering your child into ICAS this year. Please note that the ICAS tests shown for selection are at the school’s discretion. This year at Vermont Primary School we are offering: English, Maths, and Spelling for Year 2 through to Year 6 students. Writing is also being offered for Year 3 through to Year 6 students. They are not compulsory.

Students from 4ED have recently enjoyed learning about the geometric properties of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects.

Year 3 - Term 2 Inquiry

Last term, the students worked incredibly hard to put on the Amazing Aussie Expo. We would like to send out a huge Thank You to all the parents and loved ones who came along to ask questions, look at posters, support the students and help celebrate their wonderful efforts. The kids were so proud of themselves and it was a wonderful way to end an exciting unit. Here are a few photos from the big event!

Year 3 - Science - Melting Chocolate

A reminder that in the coming weeks, the Grade 3 classes will be completing an experiment to investigate changing states of matter. Your child would have brought home a pink permission slip, which hopefully you have returned! If not, could we please ask that these get returned ASAP so that your child does not miss out.

Year 3 - Term 3 Inquiry Rotations

As you may be aware after the email that was sent home last week, for Inquiry this term the students will be participating in rotations with each teacher completing fun activities to learn new skills! One of these is cooking with Miss Yates, where the students will be making some lemonade and a mini pizza each. If your child has any dietary requirements, we ask that you please provide a substitute for them (eg. lactose-free cheese). Please refer to the email with the full list of ingredients that will be used.

School Uniforms

A friendly reminder for students to please wear their school uniforms. We understand that the colder months mean that jackets are to be worn, however we ask that jumpers and t-shirts are the school colours. There is a second-hand uniform shop available if you require a new uniform to keep your child warm!

Tissues

As we continue to enter the colder months, we would greatly appreciate it if students could bring in a box of tissues for their classrooms. Thank you!

As always, we appreciate your support and encourage your active involvement in your child's education.
