Making Time

By Ivan Seskis (Head of Senior School)
I really enjoy the great outdoors. More and more I find myself in my garden and find it rejuvenating. I love working in it creating garden beds, planting seedlings, mowing and pruning. I enjoy it when I’m in the garden and notice the birds, butterflies and bees fly around amongst the flowers and trees. I enjoy taking the time to stop and look and pay attention to the little minute details of a new bud or flower, and it brings a smile to my face when I see new fruit or vegetables growing. Nature is so impressive. After working in the garden, the joy of resting in it is refreshing and it is good for my wellbeing.
It reminds me that God is pretty serious about gardening and rest as well. In Genesis it says God created all things and then He rested. The Garden of Eden would have been very impressive. As enjoyable as resting in my garden is or the Garden of Eden for that matter, the ultimate rest is found in Jesus.
Jesus says, ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.’ Matthew 11:28-29
As 2018 launches into its second month I am reminded to take the time to rest. To let peace, quiet and stillness to be part of my everyday life.
To learn from Jesus and find rest.
