Out and about with Mr Walsh

Welcome Back to Term 3
A warm welcome back to term 3 for our students, staff and wider school community. It has been great to see our students settle back into the routines of school and hit the ground running with a busy week 1 and an exciting term 3 ahead. We look forward to our daily focus of effective teaching and learning being supported through a different range of engaging experiences and community connections. We still have a number of staff and students experiencing interstate and international travel and we continue to wish them safe travels and hope they come back with rich and rewarding experiences. We have a few staff who will also be on leave at different stages and will update classes prior. We are glad at Surfside to have a core group of Casual Relief Teachers who are able to cover our classes already having pre-existing relationships and being aware of the Surfside values and expectations. We want to wish our school community all the best for the term ahead and we look forward to celebrating our student achievements and experiences.
Here are some Surfside staff snapshots of holiday adventures!
Year 5 Science Excursion - Earth Ed STEM Centre
Our year 5 students ventured out to Ballarat and attend the Earth Ed Specialist STEM centre. Earth Ed is a specialist STEM centre bringing STEM education to life for students and teachers. They aim to inspire and engage the next generation of students and teachers, and to encourage more students to pursue science and mathematics related careers.
After showing their knowledge of states of matter the year 5 students and teachers put on their lab coats and transformed into real world scientists as they explored physical and chemical changes and solved the mystery substance challenges.
The students were introduced to the world of Chemisty and particpated in a range of hands-on laboratory experiences whilst exploring physical and chemical changes. A big thank you to the year 5 team for organising this wonderful experience for the students.
Year 4 Science Incursion
There is definitely a buzz of science at Surfside as the year 4 students participated in Supreme Incursions Forces and Energy experience. Throughout this STEM incursion, the students got a buzz as they were introduced to the world of forces and energy through hands-on exploration of circuits, magnets, gravity and much more! Through scientific investigation, the students were able to test, observe and report on the application of various energy types and their impacts on different types of matter. The students were challenged to think critically, make predictions and observations with scientific terminology, keywords and equipment.
School Sport Victoria State Cross Country Championships
A massive Surfside congratulations to Sofia U who represented the school at the SSV State Cross Country Championships on Tuesday in the Yarra Ranges. Sofia performed brilliantly on a challenging course full of mud and slight hills to finish in a fantastic 3rd place. I know that Sofia like all of our year 3-6 students will now be looking forward to our upcoming Surfside athletics carnival in week 3.
Student Led Conferences
Our students and staff are looking forward to meeting with families next week. This is an opportunity for our students to showcase their learning growth and experiences throughout semester 1. It is a also a great opportunity for our school and parent community to showcase how we all work together to scaffold our kids in and out of the learning pit academically, socially and emotionally.
NAIDOC Week 2023
The National NAIDOC Week theme gor 2023 is 'For Our Elders.'
Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones. Our loved ones who pick us up in our low moments and celebrate us in our high ones. They guide our generations and pave the way for us to take the paths we can take today. Guidance, not only through generations of advocacy and activism, but in everyday life and how to place ourselves in the world.
We draw strength from their knowledge and experience, in everything from land management, cultural knowledge to justice and human rights. Across multiple sectors like health, education, the arts, politics and everything in between, they have set the many courses we follow. The struggles of our Elders help to move us forward today. The equality we continue to fight for is found in their fight. Their tenacity and strength has carried the survival of our people.
It is their influence and through their learnings that we must ensure that when it comes to future decision making for our people, there is nothing about us - without us.
We pay our respects to the Elders we’ve lost and to those who continue fighting for us across all our Nations and we pay homage to them. In 2023, how will you celebrate For Our Elders?
At Surfside Primary School we have celebrated in a variety of ways throughout week 1 and recognise the impact of our elders that have shaped our community.
