Last week, Years 5 and 6 took part in three Lightning Premierships. Here are some of our Year 6 reflections:

Tom H

On the 15th of June, we went to the Dendy District Soccer Lightning Premiership and had a blast! Right off the bat against one of the best teams we had a comfortable win 3-1 win. The rest of the games were fun and exciting with everybody having a go at goal and almost everybody scored. As we made our way to the semi-finals, undefeated, we faced our toughest opponent, Galilee.

The first goal of the game was made by the other team. And from then on we struggled and the momentum wasn’t going our way. With 30 seconds left, we had to give it our all, and that’s when a miracle happened. Hamish scored with an astounding 6 seconds left! And from there it went to a penalty shootout.

Everybody’s shot had been saved by both teams' keepers. And on the third shot, I drain it in, in the bottom corner! Everybody was shouting and celebrating, but I knew it wasn’t over yet. Our goalkeeper just needed to save the next two. And indeed he did.

It was now the grand final against Sacred Heart. We start off strong with a corner, and Daniel hit it top corner and we took the lead 1-0. The game went on for a while until they found a hole in our defence and put it in the net. All tied up at the start of the second half. I bombed it down straight to the striker who found Hamish in the box and he SCORED! For the rest of the game, we played good defence and took home the trophy. My favourite game was the semi-final because it was the most tense and exciting game. I loved going to the Lightning Premiership and I bet it will be an unforgettable moment!

Daniel

The day has just started we first beat the reigning champs St Finbars 3-1. After, we had a nice lunch break and during those 30 minutes we talked and had a lot more strategies by the end. After lunch, we had a couple of easy wins like 5-0 against St Mary’s and 7-0 against De La Salle.

But the semi-finals were against Galilee. They scored but then things turned around and we had chances. They were insanely physical and it was pouring rain. Tom N was saving everything. There were 6 seconds left, Luca dribbled it up, and Hamish scored at the buzzer. It went to penalties and it was so intense, Tom H scored and everyone went crazy! The final was on! I scored from far away. Then they scored. Then Hamish scored! The opposing team were crying, we stalled the whole school went wild!

Nicholas

The day had started, and my adrenaline boosted to a roaring height as we got on the bus. We wanted vengeance for what happened in the semi-finals last year. The first game started and I was in playing in the defence. We scored the first goal but to our disappointment, the opponent scores an audacious free kick. We reply quickly and win the match against the defending champions of this event. During the next games, we demolish our opponents and we qualified for the semi-finals! The game starts as we face one of our strongest opponents yet, Galilee! We start the match, my blood is pumped up to defend my life. We had strong possession of the ball but that did not help because shortly after we conceded a goal. At half-time, Mr Marcus gave a short talk but I got substituted, anger and dismay controlled my brain as I sat there thinking we were finished. I begged the coach to put me on and I hopped on last minute of the game. Luca passed the ball to Hamish and the unthinkable happened, we scored! WE GO WILD! The game is forced into penalties as we win and celebrate. We have made it to the finals of this event! The schools watch over us as we win 2-1. WE ARE CHAMPIONS! The opponent cried as we were victorious. We lifted a big shield with gold plates, that had each year’s winners written on it and soon it will say 2023 St Joseph’s! We head back victorious, bringing the shield home where it belongs home at St Joseph’s!

Michael

A TROPHY MIRACLE

On Wednesday, we had the Soccer Lighting Premiership and turns out we won the Prem and we got a trophy! The trophy shows all the people from different years who have competed in and won this Premiership. We won one in 2015 and haven’t won one ever since that year. Everyone was so happy we won but it was so tough. The last semi-final game wasn’t a tiebreaker until Hamish shot a goal before the time ran out. Then we had to do penalties because it was a tie. It was so tough we were all wrapping our shoulders around each other wishing our team good luck. Tom H shot the penalty against the other team. There the crowd came in and went wild! It was a miracle!

We couldn’t believe it, “Wait this can’t be real!” we all thought. Well nope, it was real. Also well done to the amazing Tom N, a goalkeeper hero blocking every shot so we could get into the finals. We were now in the finals! All the schools watching us, we felt a lot of pressure, “Don’t worry guys, we can do this!” We told ourselves. Guess what, we won! 2 to 1, how good is that?! I will always remember this day! Go St Joseph’s!

NETBALL

The day after Soccer, we went to netball. It was pretty fun, we didn’t win any games which wasn’t really a shocker but we still worked well as a team. I was super ready. I find that netball is good it’s just sometimes the rules are confusing and that’s what happened most of the time. Whistle after whistle after whistle! Well, I guess, I did some good things to help my team like passing to others so we could get to the net. We did pretty well with that but maybe next time I’ll practice netball before and learn the rules because I wasn’t too sure of them. Our team was really good and supportive and that's a really, really good thing! I really enjoyed playing netball for the first time. I loved how we all had fun, It was a really good day!

Elisa

This week I have taken part in the Soccer and Netball Lightning Premiership and it was really fun!

On Wednesday I did Soccer, It was really tough because the other schools were pretty hard, they were really good but we didn’t care as much because we had fun. At the start of our first game, I was so nervous and I felt like I didn’t want to play for any of the rounds. But when the game started I felt so relaxed and It made me feel more confident in playing. It was really sad because we only got to play four games and we didn’t make it to the semi-finals, but then the boys stepped in and got through the semis and got to the finals! We were all so nervous for them but eventually, we won! Everyone was so happy, Mrs Moore and everyone in the school was proud. On Thursday I did Netball, It was so hard and I think we did a good job. The kids were so rough, after like two seconds the ball was already in the hoop. They were tall and really good so It was really hard to beat the other schools but we tried. I was so tired but I think we had a good day!

Cleo

On Thursday the 15th of June some of the Year 6’s and 5’s went to the Netball Lightning Premiership. It was a fun experience despite our losses. I enjoyed playing against other schools and I also enjoyed the part when we got to play netball with each other. It was good to practice our shooting and throwing as well! I also got to see some people from other schools I recognised! It was good to play a few rounds of Netball as I used to play and I enjoyed being able to play it again. Unfortunately, I only got to play 3 rounds because of a Loreto interview but those 3 games were very fun! Overall, I would say Netball was very fun and I enjoyed playing a lot!

Last Friday the Year 5 and 6 students went to Righetti Oval for the Footy Lightning Premiership. Although we lost it was still very fun and eventful, everyone had a great day! Our first game was against De La Salle and we only managed to score a single point but our next game was amazing, everyone was on fire and we were scoring goals left and right! We then lost the next two games against Galilee and St Patrick's and then we were eliminated. We then watched St Joan of Arc face Sacred Heart in the final, Joan of Arc ended up winning by about 30 points. We then hopped on the bus and went back to school, and that was our 2023 Lightning Premiership.
