Teaching and Learning

Term Overviews

We are looking forward to a term full of learning and fun! Please see the overviews below for details about the units that your child will be learning.

NAPLAN reports

NAPLAN student reports for students in Years 3 and 5 have now been sent home.  Tests were completed in May this year and tested the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy.

NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents and carers to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress. Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each assessment. A result at the national minimum standard indicates that the student has demonstrated the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to participate fully in that year level. If you have any questions or concerns, or did not receive your child's report, please contact your child's classroom teacher.

Swimming

Queensland State primary schools are required to offer a water safety and swimming program. At Glenore Grove we do swimming as part of our Health and Physical Education curriculum. Our swimming program provides students with the opportunity to acquire, apply and evaluate movement skills, concepts and strategies. Students learn how to respond confidently, competently and creatively in a variety of physical activity contexts and settings including both familiar and unfamiliar water locations. By discussing and practising water safety procedures, students consider their own and others’ safety, make informed decisions and take action to cope with potential problems without placing themselves or others in unnecessary danger. Students will learn a range of skills including entries and exits, buoyancy, submergence, swimming for survival, survival sequence, rescue and lifesaving and water safety knowledge.

Outdoor Classroom Day!

Outdoor Classroom Day is a global movement to inspire and celebrate outdoor play and learning, at home and at school. On Outdoor Classroom Day itself, which has two dates each year, teachers celebrate with a special day outdoors for their class. The next Outdoor Classroom Day is coming up on 3 November 2022. Children are spending less time outdoors than ever before and this is affecting their health, wellbeing and love of the natural world. Time outdoors – on Outdoor Classroom Day and every day – will make children happier and healthier, as well as helping them form habits that will stick with them for life. They will have a love of the natural world and will take action to protect it.

STEM Day - Term 3

Our STEM Day Team is extremely proud of how our students took on the day using a growth mindset to complete some very tricky but fun STEM challenges.

The Preps: Hansel and Gretel were the inspiration for the Preps to tackle flying paper planes. Very proud to see them working and thinking with that growth mindset (and a 10001 paddle pop sticks!!).

Year 1 and 2: This Goldilocks inspired growth mindset theme was used to create a chair (for Gold to sit on) using a set of recyclable materials. Students had to work in pairs to plan, create and test their designs. So creative!!

Year 3 and 4: This cohort worked through a growth mindset fairy tale that involved a city mouse and a country mouse making some tough decisions. They had to create a functional marble maze. What wonders we saw that day!

Year 5 and 6: This term the cohort did class and group science experiments relating to pressure and force using backing soda, vinegar, balloons and rockets. Had A LOT of fun today making things pop!! Very proud to see them working and thinking with that growth mindset and being super safe with all of the materials.
