Leadership at BHPS

Next week our Character Strength focus is on “Leadership”.

People who are good leaders are able to organise their group and make sure that everyone feels included.

Leadership comes within the MEANING arm of our PERMA model

https://wellbeingforprimaryschoolstudents.edublogs.org/2022/11/09/leadership-6/

The following entries have been written by our school captain candidates for 2023!

As part of the selection process, these students worked collaboratively in groups of four to write a piece for our school newsletter and to present at assembly.  The brief is to share an explanation of one element of the BHPS PERMA model.

Each will be talking about Positive Emotions. Engagement, Relationships OR Accomplishment.

Archer, Isobel, Matilda and Will have written about Engagement

ENGAGEMENT

Engagement is a very important arm of our school's PERMA Starfish. The model that describes our school values and social and emotional learning curriculum.

But what exactly is "engagement"? Have you ever been so absorbed in reading a book that when your parents called you for dinner you couldn't hear them? Well, that is an example of engagement. You were so engaged in what you were reading, and so focussed in that moment, you blocked out everything else. Engagment comes in all forms, from reading a good book to having a kick of the footy.

Engagement involves mindfulness, to focus on the task at hand and live in the moment. Mindfulness is important for mental wellbeing and to live a happy life.

Engagement includes the Character Strengths of Enthusiasm, Leadership Curiosity, Love of Learning and Self Control.

When you are engaged in your school you learn more, and this makes learning things a lot more enjoyable. It's a win win!

This assembly Matilda and Issy will do a presentation on Engagement. Hopefully by our combined efforts you have a better understanding of engagement.

RELATIONSHIPS

by Jimmy, Zac, Skye and Baxter

Relationships are a key part of having a successful and happy life. The five main character strengths of relationships are;

Friendship - Friendship plays an important part in relationships because friends prevent loneliness and give happiness.

Teamwork - The importance of teamwork in relationships is to help each other. The more you help each other, the stronger your connection will become.

Fairness -  Fairness is taking care of each other and making sure they are OK, and also being fair with others.

Open-Mindedness - Open-Mindedness is important in relationships because if you're not open-minded, you won't be able to make any friends. Be curious, not judgmental.

Forgiveness - Forgiveness is letting go of other's mistakes in a kind and positive way.

With a good relationship you feel happy and you feel ready to give things a go. Good relationships can make all this happen and more. Good relationships are kind and caring.

There are no strangers at this school, just friends we haven't met yet.

Thank you

ACCOMPLISHMENT

by Jonty, Stuee, Aley and Casper

Hello, this is Jonty and Stuee joining you from BHPS to talk about Accomplishment. If you're wondering what Accomplishment is, it is us using positive mindsets to push through your boundaries and goals to achieve something great. Sometimes achieving positive outcomes doesn't always mean winning the race and flying the flag.

Sometimes positive outcomes can mean achieving old goals or setting new ones.

Accomplishment and courage are heavily linked together because when you show courage and bravery you can push through obstacles and fear. Courage is in everyone, not just in superheroes. Everybody can be courageous from trying new food to moving to a new place away from your friends.

If you're wondering what else links to accomplishment then there are many valuable things, but one of the most important traits and aspects is persistence. Persistence can come in many forms and outcomes, such as if you were running a marathon you could easily stop because it was hard, but if you ahve persistence you would push through. Sometimes you don't have to finish the marathin or the tak you were trying to complete. You may just push through and run a couple of metres or run 10 km more but the most important thing is you showed persistence.

I hope you enjoy reading this newsletter about accomplishments and the value and aspects of the PERMA learning model.

POSITIVE EMOTIONS

by Maddie, Tom & Elliott

Positive Emotions are one of the five important parts of the PERMA starfish at Barwon heads Primary. The PERMA starfish is the values, beliefs and morals that Barwon Heads Primary follow.

Positive Emotions are shown through the Character Strengts Humour, Modesty, Love, Gratitude, Kindness and Hope.

The trait of having positive emotions both allow you to notice how others are feeling and to tell others how you are feeling.  Another trait can be to use popsitive thiking skills to improve how you are feeling. This can be by simply pausing to clear your head for a moment or just to think of things to be grateful for.

Positive emotions are an important strength to ahve in school and life to help you do well.

Thank you for reading.

POSITIVE EMOTIONS

By Anita

Today I will be writing about our schools PERMA starfish and the positive emotions (which is what the P stands for).

At our school one of our biggest values is the PERMA starfish which stands for: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and accomplishment.  During class we have Pos.Ed. Where we learn about the PERMA starfish, and all about the feelings around it. We also have a blog about it made by Miss Kebbell where we watch amazing videos about PERMA in action.

Now I will talk to you about the positive emotions aspect of PERMA, positive emotions is where you feel happy, and full in a way. We talk all about positive emotions, feelings and about what makes us feel this way, for me it is my hobbies and my dog.  There are many ways to feel positive emotions, anywhere, any time, doing anything. On behalf of BHPS I would like to say please try and feel positive emotions whenever you can so you can live life to the fullest.
