The Edible Garden.

Students are currently planting:

Climbing beans planted by very enthusiastic students include purple king climbing beans, blue lake climbing beans and yellow climbing beans. All these variety of beans are now available for purchase via the seedling stall for $2 per punnet.

Popcorn varieties sown and grown by Grade One and Two's are mini strawberry popcorn and Glass Gem Popcorn, students planted these in the Edible Space last week and they are already looking wonderful. Very much looking forward to popcorn activity in Term 1 next year! You can also grow popcorn at home, seedlings available via the seedling stall.

It all starts with the soil…

The Edible Garden at BHPS produces a large amount of food due to holistic management. We build our own soil from compost that we make via student lunchbox scraps, garden prunings, donated sawdust, shredded office paper, cardboard, chicken coop waste, spent café coffee grounds and a range of other materials that we find in our community.

Students are learning where their food comes from, what it takes to grow food to get it to them and who does the work to grow their food.

This terms studies have included soil science, organic pest management, pollination, responsible harvesting, companion planting, seed saving, seed sowing, the earths finite resources, crop rotation, organic pest management, practising weekly character strengths.
