Selamat siang!

It was another busy week of Remote Learning for the students. We are very proud of the commitment students showed to their Remote Learning, completing and handing in the slides each day. It is great to see the enthusiasm and engagement continue and we are very, very excited for the return to on-site learning.

For Wellbeing, students completed a range of activities around gratitude, gender norms and cyber-safety. Completing gratitude sentence starters such as “Something I am grateful for, right now is…” and “Something that made me laugh this week was…” allows students the opportunity to recognise and appreciate the good things that they have or are happening around them. We continued our unit on gender norms and the influence they have on people. Students were given the opportunity to provide their opinion on a range of facts about current gender norms and note the impact this may have on our society. Students also discussed in their morning zooms the important cyber-safety topic of group chats and the risks and tips that are important when engaging in group chats.

In Literacy, students began writing their speeches for the MPRPS Public Speaking competition. This year, the Leadership Centre students are responding to the topic: “What happiness means to me…” They brainstormed a range of different ideas around the meaning of happiness and used mind-maps to record their ideas on. Students also began experimenting with different ways to introduce their speeches, with the focus about being able to capture the audiences’ attention through an anecdote, catchy joke or phrase or through emotive language. We also tasked the students to incorporate the 5 W’s (Who, When, Where, What, Why) within the body of the speeches as a strategy to add specific detail to the points they make about happiness.

In Maths, we finished our Division unit with the students impressing their teachers with their understanding through Essential Assessment. We also continued our exploration of Statistics where the students interpreted and analysed a range of statistical data representations such as pictographs, dot plots, side by side column graphs and stem and leaf plots. During our Maths focused sessions, we were able to provide students the opportunity to use their “I can statements” that were mentioned last week, to set their Maths goal for Term 4. We are really excited to see the students use these “I can statements” as their goal over the next few weeks and we look forward to the independence, critical thinking and accountability these will bring.

Have a great week!

  • My favourite thing to do last week is writing speeches for the public speaking competition because it’s good to reflect on what you’ve done after you’ve written the speech and edit it. - Ollie C
