Australian Mathematics Competition

On 5 August, just two days before Armidale went into lockdown, we were lucky to be able to run this year's Australian Mathematics Competition. The AMC is a highly regarded annual international competition for school students, one of the biggest of its kind in the world, with over half a million entrants from all over Australia, Asia and Europe.

In this year's event,  61 of our keenest and most talented mathematics students participating. We also arranged for six students at Armidale City Public School to take part in the AMC  -  a nice link with one of our feeder schools.

In the AMC, students tackle 30 highly challenging mathematics questions in 75 minutes or less, with the difficulty of the questions graded for their age group but rapidly increasing in difficulty to challenge the strongest mathematical thinkers.

AMC results will be delayed this year because of inevitable complications from Covid-19 situation; but we expect to hear sometime during Term 4 how our students went.

We wish them all well.

The ASC Chess Team - Khaiam Ali, Flynn Hess, Marley Doak, Adyn Rogers-Ryan and Aayan Ahmed - continued their competitive campaign through online games when learning-from-home.

Back at school in Week 10, they had two important online matches to wrap up Term 3:

  1. Semi-finals of NSW Junior Chess League Schools Competition - Mereweather HS were successful in the matches played on Thursday, but all ASC members played well and developed additional skills for future deployment. Thank you to Mr Brown for managing these games.
  2. Grand final of Sydney Academy of Chess Tournament - we wish them the best in the lead up to this all day event scheduled for the last day of school!

Chess Club is held every Tuesday in the Library, and players of all skill levels are welcome!
