Magis report

The John XXIII Creative Edge Year 8 team performed superbly in the WA grand final to finish runners-up to Iona College at Curtin University on Saturday.  The grand final involves a three-hour lock-up preparation for a ten minute performance, plus an impromptu challenge.  Congratulations to Jennifer Ong, Zoe McIlree, Luisa Parish, Elsie Samson, Amelia Watts and Poppy Hartfield on your outstanding performances, representing the college with great distinction.

Also last weekend the College was represented in the British Parliamentary Debating by the Year 7 team of Joy Cho and Imogen Thompson who performed very creditably against mainly older opponents  at Bob Hawke College.  The Year 9 team of Thomas Syminton and Jacob Davila excelled, winning or coming second in each debate (out of 4 teams for this format).

Response for the Royal Commonwealth Public Speaking, Ethics Olympiad and International debating next term  has been good, with  entries already in for each.  Teams will be finalised at the start of next term, and entries will remain open until the end of week one. The Magis Term 4 calendar will be sent out with the first newsletter.

The Magis Awards Breakfast was held on Thursday after this newsletter was produced, and a full summary of awards, plus photos from presentations will be in the next newsletter.  Attached with this newsletter is a summary of performances for each homeroom  in the House Academic Challenge series, plus  the overall House championship results. Koolyangarra won from Loreto, St Louis and Campion, but all Houses had many great performers, and  525 students participated in the Homeroom Academic Challenge program, many in four or five events, a remarkable response. Please note that the Academic Challenge series shows the actual aggregate total points scored by each House and homeroom, not the official scores which are based on a different system, with 10 points for first place, 8 for second down to one point for all who score 1-9 out of the 30 challenge questions.

Finally best wishes to year 12’s for success in the Trial WACE Exams, and to all students for an enjoyable holiday.
