SCSA Swimming

Cold and windy. Not the ideal weather for a swim competition to take place, but it was what it was. After finishing our free subway and a cookie, we departed school around 3:30 pm just in time for a quick warmup at 4:30 pm. I could feel the nerves and adrenaline starting to kick in the more time flew. Diving in the water and struggling to get back out of the water was my daily routine that day. My body shivered non-stop as soon as I got out of the pool after each race, it was unbearable, but I knew I needed to keep pushing. I knew in the back of my mind that this SCSA swimming was probably my last time swimming competitively. This was what motivated me to give it my all and help bring back a win for the school. I have been swimming for 10 years and competitively for 4. I have been involved with the swimming team since Year 7, but this year was not like any other. I had both my younger sisters with me representing the team, and to make matters even more interesting I was the only Year 12 student representing the school that night. The night ended with a victory celebration, and I couldn’t have been more proud of every single person there, every point mattered that night.  Started off with a win and ended with a win.

Melinda Lao, Year 12, 2022 Swimming Captain

Last Thursday we had our annual SCSA Swimming night where students were selected as a part of a squad to represent Killester at MSAC (Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre). We took a team of about 50 swimmers all from different year levels.

We were entered in the Division 3 competition for the night, swimming against other schools including: St. Marys, St. Aloysius, Harkaway Hills and Mercy.

Our girls were amazing throughout the night. We were in the outside pool so after they jumped out it was a little cold, but they never complained. They were always first in the marshalling room, ready and waiting patiently to be called upon to swim.

The night concluded at about 8:15pm, our leaders went down to the pool deck to wait for the final results to be announced.

In each age group the results were the following:

Juniors - Killester - 2nd

Inters - Killster - 2nd

Seniors - Killester - 1st!

Then a drum roll for the final overall results for the night….

5th Harkaway 38 points

4th St Mary’s 190 points

3rd Mercy 239 points

2nd St Aloysius - 768 points

1st Killester !!!!! - 769 points

1 point the difference!! Can you believe it??? Go Killester!!!!

Well done to Melinda Lao, who was nominated as our 2022 Swimming Captain and was the only Year 12 to come on the night and swim, we couldn't have done it without you Melinda!

Thank you so much to all the girls who swam on the night, you were incredible girls and we couldn't have won without so many people filling in events, swimming up in races etc.

Thank you to all my helpers that came to help out with jobs on the night (and in some cases, swam as well!)

A special thank you goes to the PE staff, as well as Nicole Scott, Meaghan Keating and Elizabeth O’Gorman who came and helped us on the night. Thank you so much to all of our amazing staff.   We earned this one girls… 1 point! Such an incredible effort. Go Killester!
