Wonder 2022

Wonderful Showcase

The Wonder Team is still catching their breath, having had their minds blown away by the exhibits at yesterday's Wonder Showcase Presentation.  Creativity and innovation were in abundant supply as all the work of the term came to fruition.  It never fails to astound us just how amazing our students can be when they are given the chance to take control of their own learning and produce a project which builds on their current strengths, while also allowing them the possibility of developing new skills.  The Showcase was a clear case in point.

Our Wonder Program is based on sound design-thinking educational theory.  It provides students with the chance to develop their skills in the areas of communication, problem solving, collaboration, curiosity and persistence - all skills that are highly sought after in post school working life.

Yet, even with this firm platform, we wouldn’t be honest if we didn’t admit that we were all a little nervous about our own Killester Wonder Program using WISDOM as our basis.  Just like the students, we, too, felt that we were taking a leap of faith.  And wow was that leap of faith justified…….

Killester College itself was the focus of the Term 1 project.  For Year 7s, this involved an investigation of a specific building, looking for ways to improve its sustainability and efficiency.  After hosting a morning tea with some alumni, the Year 8 students created ways to celebrate the journeys of past students.  For the Year 9 students, it was a chance to look at giving back to the community, whether that be the Killester community itself or the wider local community.

If yesterday’s Showcase is an indication of the calibre of what our students can produce after only one term of the program, we are excitedly looking ahead to next term when the focus of the projects will address an aspect of the key question - Where in the World?

The world will indeed be their oyster.

And I, for one, can’t wait to see the results of their efforts.
