Killester Library Reading Room

The Reading Room is one of the most important spaces in our Library and in our school because reading is central to a well-rounded education, and students who read  consistently and often usually achieve wonderful results.

Five reasons to read

  • Improves your concentration and memory.
  • Expands your vocabulary  and strengthens your writing abilities.
  • Enhances your knowledge.
  • Increases your imagination and creativity.
  • Reduces stress and helps you relax.

Why reading matters

We should all read on a daily basis for at least 30 minutes to enjoy the benefits of reading. It is a great pleasure to sit in a quiet place and enjoy reading because reading a good book is one of the most enjoyable experiences one can have.

What the research says

It’s when we develop that love of books, that desire to curl up and get lost in other worlds and lives that the magic starts to happen. According to research carried out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, reading enjoyment is more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic status. A 2013 study from the Institute of Education found that children who read for pleasure, or who read at home, do much better in spelling, vocabulary and even maths tests right up to the age of 16.

The importance of reading at home

Evidence suggests that parents and the home environment are essential to the early teaching of reading and fostering a love of reading. Children whose home experiences promote the view that reading is a source of entertainment are likely to become motivated to read.  Encourage your child to read for pleasure everyday, and show them that you also love reading.
