Relay for Life

The last weekend of March saw our students participate in the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life.  After being postponed for two years, it was great to see this event back on our calendar and on our bottom school oval, bringing our local community together to raise awareness and funds for cancer.  Students were incredibly organised, setting up their team and preparing for the 12-hour event.  At the closing ceremony, one of our AHS students, Elly Chamberlain, was chosen to light a candle as part of acknowledgement that cancer affects people in a variety of ways.

Auburn has raised $1247 so far, with the whole event at a current total of $144, 072. Thank you to the Staff (Ross Pritchard, Jane Szokolik, Sophie Oldfield, Pauline Delhostal, Roz Mountain) who also participated by joining the event throughout the day.  A wonderful effort from our AHS community that I hope we can continue in 2023!

The website is still open to donate https://www.relayforlife.org.au/fundraisers/auburnhighschool/hawthorn-2022 if you would like to support our teams.

Year 11 Fit to Drive Incursion

Year 11 students were lucky to have the Fit to Drive workshop on the 29th of March (Week 9).  Funded by the Department of Transport, the TAC and the Boroondara City Council, the F2D Workshop aims to prevent serious injuries and lives lost amongst young Victorian road users.  Students spent the morning exploring the complexities of decision-making and assessing risk as a road user.  Facilitators praised our students for their high levels of engagement throughout the day and were really impressed with the ideas that they came up with to improve road safety in their community.

Some of our Year 11 students’ Community Plan Ideas:

•          More workshops at schools

•          Agreement amongst friends to respect each other’s concerns/always have a designated driver

•          Neighbourhood newsletter with information about unsafe behaviours

•          Posters around school

•          Information about alcohol support groups/therapy at sporting clubs
