PIVOT

Pivot is an evidence-based student feedback survey that uses 25 questions that are based on the Australian Professional Teaching Strategies to capture student feedback on teaching and learning at Auburn High School.  Students from 7-12 completed their first PIVOT surveys for 2022 in Weeks 6 and 7.  The results from these surveys remain anonymous but provide both classroom teachers and the whole school with valued insight into what students want from their learning.

How is PIVOT beneficial for students?

Student voice opportunities such as PIVOT allow our students to participate in decision-making processes that have an effect on them as students, and on Auburn High School.  Research literature tells us that when adults listen to and learn from students, teachers can teach better and students can learn better, as a focus on student participation in processes of analysing and revising teaching and learning approaches can enhance student progress and learning.  Now that teachers have received their Pivot data there will be the opportunity to share the data with students in their classes, increasing the transparency and conversations within our classrooms about learning and teaching.

How is PIVOT beneficial for teachers?

PIVOT provides teachers at Auburn High School with the opportunity to collect student feedback on their teaching practice.  After the student surveys are completed, teachers receive detailed reports on what students are currently experiencing in their learning.  The data reports presented to teachers provide summaries of what the students perceive their teachers' three greatest strengths and three areas for growth are in the classroom.  Teachers then have the opportunity to collaboratively analyse the feedback in learning teams and plan future actions for the classroom.  Teachers plan actions built on evidence-based best practice.

Teach the Teacher

Teach the Teacher, a student-led professional learning session for our teachers was held in Week 9. Students were part of a focus group that analysed the Term 1 Pivot data for our school.  For their session they chose to focus on the statements ‘My teachers give me choices about the work I do’.  They researched, planned and presented strategies that teachers can use in their lessons, in CATs/SACs and for homework or revision, to support students in having greater choice in their learning.  After presenting, students joined the teachers in their teams to provide ideas during the application phase of the session.  An amazing effort from all our students involved.  Well done to Prateek, Joshua, Patrick, Amy, Elly, Elise, Joss and Nick!
